I agree with this comment. It seems like most of the issue with arsenic in rice is connected to the use of pesticides. A quick search yielded a response letter from the Organic Trade Association that basically states this. But it also acknowledges that there are other natural sources of arsenic, and it should be monitored.

Not that the FDA is the final word in food safety (unfortunately) but they published a report in late 2012 on arsenic in rice and other foods, and didn't believe it necessary to warn people to change their diets unless there were other preexisting risk factors.

Like a lot of other foods that are susceptible to bioaccumulation of toxins, it's best to go with the organic option if you can get it.

I love this because (of course) it's beautiful, but also wholly realistic. The "high/low" approach makes it seem doable to someone who's not an architect by profession (or millionaire). There's no crazy demolitions of walls or creation of windows that would be out of reach by most, just some light rearranging (the sink jumped over a few feet) and updating of materials. The space is still as small as it started out as, just way more efficient and nice to look at. Well done!

I would be so pleased to find that cup in a thrift shop-- I would much rather have a well-built vintage borosilicate Pyrex than the new stuff that seems to have a pesky reputation for shattering and exploding all the time.

I think that the whole thing makes WAY more sense when you read her blog, and see more up-close photos. The original floors looked really damaged and would've required a lot of work and time that one does not have with small children.
The after-shots also look much better when you see the close-ups on the blog, and not so veneer-y as that one photo in this post.
Plus, it's not as though this is forever. When the time comes, it will be just as easy to take off the chalk-paint and refinish as it would've if they had started from the damaged boards.

Goat cheese stuffed dates quickly broiled are delicious, impressive-looking, and super easy. Alternatively, you can bacon-wrap them too for extra decadence.

Also fancy looking but easy are Belgian endive leaves, separated, and each little leaf given a dollop of chunky blue cheese dressing (or just the cheese if you fear spillage) with crushed walnuts on top.

If you were getting less-traditional, you could do butter lettuce cups filled with spicy chopped chicken for a more protein-plus option.

One my favorites, though a bit more work-intensive, are arancini (fried risotto balls). Sooo good.

Just as a shout out for Grove-- I tried a few of the Etsy/various-other-sites bamboo cases and they pretty much all disintegrated on me within weeks (what can I say? I'm not quite at OtterBox-level clumsiness, but it does fall the few inches onto the floor from my bed ledge a few times a month).

I have had the Grove bamboo case since March and besides a few dings and general denim pocket-patina, it's still very intact and beautiful (even after said weekly-floor-drops). They're all handcrafted by really neat folks in Portland that are paid a nice wage to make these beautiful cases so I feel the cost is quite well-warranted.

I, for one, would love to receive any of the above. It's true that hostess gifts are kind of rare to see these days, but are super lovely and all-the-more surprising when received (which to me, is the best part of it. Seems less compulsory now). That said, when I'm going over to a friends house, it's probably a bottle of wine I have in tow. But when I'm a guest at the home of my parents friends (or my boyfriends parents/relatives), I do feel a bit more inclined to give a nice token like a pretty soap or such-- like maybe it's a generational thing?

My parents own the most stunning couch upholstered with royal blue wool custom-built and shipped from Finland over thirty years ago. None of the colors above quite match, maybe a more vibrant version of the R&B Reese. For ages anyone who came over would always comment on it, mostly positively, but a few obviously turned off by its intensity. My mom will be so pleased to know she has been ahead of her time all along :)

Neat idea! If people are thinking that "Plexiglas" is too spendy, don't look for the brand name (you know, it's the Kleenex vs. tissues, thing). I just looked up "acrylic sheets" on Home Depot's website, and came up with a 12 x 24 panel that is less than $15. Price is right for me-- gonna get some cool fabric remnants and whip something up this weekend!

Soooo beautiful. Everything in the place, Alina, the photos-- all simply stunning. There is a very old-world, painterly feel to the space and how it's been photographed (the first comment was spot on about a Dutch master painting), but I love how the modern touches have been so seamlessly integrated. I vote that the entire loft get a house tour, please!

Super cute post...I hate making the bed but AT has inspired me to make it a good practice, and this might be the ultimate incentive!

Hmm... @kellieinca, I actually find that my traditional looking S&P shakers get dustier looking. I have the Pigeon Toe set and love it. I keep them close to my cooking workspace which makes it easier to season quickly and have a better visual of how much is going into a dish. I go through a lot of S&P when cooking so the contents never linger more than a week or so in them. Then they transition easily to the dining table and their looks always get raves (helps that they're made locally too).

I feel like the place I live in now is a total deal. $675 for a 475 sq ft studio in NW Portland (close enough to the Pearl that when I tell people my address they'll often mistake it as such).

Now, $675 for that size may not seem like such a steal-- but it is SO well laid-out, and it's basically a 1-br but since the "dressing room" (aka the bedroom) doesn't have a window facing out (i.e. a legal egress) it only counts as a studio. Water (heated), sewer, trash, recycling all included.

The building is 101 years old, with original hardwoods and other quirky built-ins and woodwork. So full of character. South-facing windows with tons of light and a view of Lair Hill. Plus, $60/year on-street parking and I can always find a spot right in front. Plus, really hands-off landlords that don't care if you paint or make other modifications to the space.

I don't think I can ever move!

Hm. Maybe I've got a tough butt (haha) because I find those Reidar chairs to be just fine. Olympic Provisions NW in Portland uses them in their dining room and every time I've dined there I haven't noticed them to be uncomfortable. I have noticed them to look freakin' fabulous with the rest of the decor, though. Maybe I'm just distracted by meat...

A note on the lemon juice (though not the original author)-- if you're not using lemon juice, then just be careful when water-bath canning. The lemon is used to acidify the jam to help preserve it properly. Low-acid foods can still grow nasties in the absence of air when canned, so it's to be on the safe side to use lemon juice or citric acid, or vinegar. Strawberries shouldn't be much of an issue, but acidifying is a crucial canning step for fruits like tomatoes or figs and can't be skipped.

Glorious, glorious maximalism! You embraced the space, stuffed it with your treasures, and painted it a jewelbox hue. So many other people in that size of space would've gone minimal-- I love the abandon of this.

Maybe it's just my taste, but it kinda bums me out to see that most of these writers slept in dinky little twin beds (and even the exceptions look to be full/doubles). They all look rather modest at best, receding and sort of melancholy.

While yes, it would've been nice to perhaps get a better overall feel of the space with more "establishing"-type photos, sometimes that's just impossible because of the way the space is broken up. Not everyone lives in a lovely open-air flat or loft that allows for great sweeping shots of an entire apartment, or even a given room.

I lived in a stunning 3-bedroom Victorian-era apartment with some friends, but I'm sad that I don't have many great photos of the space because of the weird little hallways and awkward corridors made it so that if I were to take a "sweeping" shot of the living room, I would've had to do so by shooting through a connecting hallway while standing in my kitchen, meaning you'd see two sets of doorways in the foreground. Not always going to work. I feel like these photos represented the apartment the best they could.
