When I lived in NYC a few years ago I was lucky enough to live right by Ft. Tryon and Inwood Park. Inwood in particular is so expansive that it really makes you feel like you're outside of stresses the city for a few hours.

Seconding the British humor--Father Ted's "A Christmassy Ted"! Not sure if it is on Netflix or not. Also, Doctor Who Christmas Specials.

Oh, I am so guilty of the whole "weights by the television" idea... they just get pushed further and further under the couch.

Want need wear read... what a great way to break it down! I'm going to be using this as a guideline in the future.

My mom always said that Santa Claus was only responsible for stocking presents, which cut down on the excess a little bit... but only a little bit. My brother and I were long-hoped-for-and-almost-given-up-on grandchildren, and I think our grandmother wished she could have provided more for my dad and his sisters when they were growing up--so we were kind of avalanched by presents some years.

Descriptive file names are also a good idea--if you name them so that they will be sorted chronologically (starting with the date, like 12.08.22), have some kind of description (e.g. DadBirthday), and keep the unique ID # given by the camera you won't have to sort through tons of layers of folders to figure out what you have--they'll sort themselves! Adobe Bridge and Renamer 4 Mac have bulk file naming functions that make this easier. CNET has some other good ones too.

Totally hearing Jillian Ruth. I also hate when whatever is on the wall is placed badly... like a few tiny pictures making a large expanse of wall look lonelier and all the more "renter beige".

Great ideas! I have way too many mugs--people find out you are a tea drinker, and that is what you get for every gift giving occasion. As for the book pile-ups, Better World Books is another great site that takes book donations. Books that are donated to the public library are often passed on to a library friends group and then sold at book sales, which can be surprising to people who think their books will end up on the shelves. But these book sales are wonderful fundraisers for the library--so don't dismay and go ahead and donate with gusto!

I like having people over when I'm first getting to know them, because I feel like my apartment will pull a lot of weight in letting people know what I'm like. (And I am a homebody who is generally more comfortable there than anywhere else.) It's full of books and art and thrift store finds--all very colorful--and they are excellent personality signifiers. I try to live up to how my apartment looks, but it's harder to choose a cute outfit every day than it is to make a few decisions now and then about home decor.

Consider covering the refrigerator and/or dishwasher and/or side of microwave in pretty contact paper! (idea via this blog: http://www.delightfully-tacky.com/2010/12/diy-faux-wood-fridge.html) A yellow and white pattern would look nice with the dark brown of the cabinets and the sage green rug/dish towels you already have (especially if you get some white hardware for the cabinets!) Also, a cute coordinating toaster & tea kettle would pull everything together and look adorbs.

Echoing the sentiments on moving the brooms into the pantry and boxes off the top of the refrigerator. Maybe move the trashcan into cupboard area under the sink (or get a smaller one if it won't fit.)

For the walls... chalk boards are so cute and functional, so maybe a big chalkboard in a pretty frame where the brooms are currently hanging? Decorative/decal wall stickers would look pretty on the wall over the sink and stove areas.

Totally a pair of '70s looking brick red heeled oxfords at Brooklyn flea for $50. I didn't even try them on--because I knew I would have to buy them if they fit--and I was trying to save money before a big move. They were the most beautiful shoes though, and I'm still trying to find their equivalent.
