If you plan on using laundry water it might be better to use a detergent alternative or go without. At our house we use the SmartKlean laundry ball. http://www.smartklean.com/
No soap, softener, or dryer sheets needed. You don't even need the extra rinse cycle! It's changed my laundry habits forever!
This would allow you to easily use your greywater without the concern for detergents or other chemicals getting into your plants or the environment.

DC Mandy - we had the same problem. Then we found a lift-top coffee table - Instant dining table when you want it, coffee table when you don't. They can be pricey, but save space.

There is a new product out that is fantastic.
It's called SmartKlean laundry ball. http://www.smartklean.com/
I've been using it for a year now and LOVE it.
No detergents needed, no dryer sheets needed. Just cold water.
You don't even need the rinse cycle - how GREEN is that??
It lasts for 365 loads, which for me would be around 3 years.
The only thing I do miss is the fantastic smelling detergent out there.
But to have truly clean clothes and help the environment...I can do without.
