I think your room in all black would look spectacular! It currently looks like a medium gray already so I'm not sure why the skeptics are freaking out. The only thing I would add is that you may want to get a white quilt/coverlet, maybe like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30162637/#/10162638

to replace the gray one at the bottom of your bed, just to add a little brightness. With the addition of a white or off-white coverlet at the base of the bed, I think the rest of your bedding will continue to work well.

When my parent's were newly weds they lived in an apartment & they starched fabric to the walls. This blogger shows herself doing the project with her mom & has a link to instructions, if you're interested.

Very similarly to what tallmary said - I would suggest the sofa & end table go in front of windows/baseboard, but not pushed up against the wall, a few inches out or even a foot (if space allows); the dining table on the wall between the closet & bedroom doors, allowing easier access to the kitchen; I would switch the bookcase & desk around or possibly (as some suggested) even get rid of the desk & add another bookshelf for storage & pretty things. If the layout picture is true to size, you should have enough room to float the sofa out a bit from the wall, allowing for a sofa table behind it. If you added a sofa table you could even get rid of your end table which would visually free up some space.

These duvets from Ikea would work well with this theme if transitioning to a "big kid" room:

The Ikea Hack mirror from this old apartment therapy article would work nicely with this theme as well:

And if you'd like to go all out on the nautical theme; Elsie at ABeautifulMess, did a great tutorial on how to stamp/paint an accent wall. She used a stamp in the shape of an anchor.

I decided to do a little research & see how low I could go in designing one of these boards.

$400 + the cost of paint & stencil. The stenciled wall on the left is DIY by http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/, the stenciled wall on the right is a stencil sold on Etsy.com for $40.

& although they do run between $350 & $1000, I'd want to support him instead of make my own.

In response to the many comments on sofa beds I would say: although sofa beds have a come a long way, you have to pay a lot of money for a good one & it seems you are looking for an economical solution. Also if your parents are staying for more than two days, even the most comfortable & expensive sofa bed can become difficult to sleep on. I have spent a week on a very expensive, brand new sofa bed & by the third night I was starting to feel the supportive bars of the bed.
Offering your room to your parents & making the den up to be your temporary room seems like the best solution (at least with the information provided). You could go the roll away mattress route & purchase one to two futon mattress that could easily be rolled up & placed against the wall w/ pillows or stack two twin mattresses or mattress/boxspring up like a day bed with cover & pillows. The futon route would make it easier to transition your den back to the way you usually use it & the stacked twin mattress look could be used as a sofa in your small den, if you con't already have one.

I also have Fiestaware by Homer Laughlin. I have place settings & accent pieces in two discontinued colors & I have added two new colors to the mix. I collected Fiesta as a teen (I mostly received them as Christmas & birthday gifts) in about 5 colors, some of which I no longer care for. So I sold those on Ebay & registered for turquoise & white place settings when I got married. So I now have Persimmon, a pale Yellow, Turquoise & White and I hope to add a few more accent pieces in the turquoise/white.

I agree with martigny, If you want stuff like this, buy a ticket & shop the tourist traps & enjoy experiencing the real U.K. & maybe learn a thing or two while you're there. I like some of this stuff but I'd much rather make a shadow box with my own souvenirs from my trip there or have my underground map framed, than pay this kind of money for these things.

I didn't vote because I have 2 thoughts on the paint.

#1 I like "Spanish Olive", I really like grey toned walls

#2 I like "Snow White" but not with the current off-white trim & door. I think it would look really great with trim in the same color (maybe in a semi-gloss) but with the door in a brighter color, maybe "sweet vibrations", maybe something not shown.

I agree with CREMEDELA; I wouldn't put it above or right next to the toilet because of spray! I'd try hanging a bar or hook to the left of the vanity if you have the space or you could even forget mounting anything & go with a small bar that fits over you vanity door/drawer, like this: http://www.target.com/p/interDesign-Over-the-Cabinet-Towel-Bar-Satin-Nickel/-/A-14028186

@apartmenttherapy: I have two questions; #1. Why was a designer needed to do this relatively minor alteration? & #2. Since people seem to need a designer for a project like this, any suggestions on how I can get into the business, so I can be hired to redesign people's rooms?

All four of my younger sisters shared a room for about 10 years. They are 10+ years younger than myself (we have 2 brothers in between who also used to share a room). I had a small room to myself (but shared with my brother, nearest me in age, when we were little). Now that myself & my brothers are grown & moved out, my sisters are divided 2 & 2 in two large rooms. The 2 older ones (18 & 20) love sharing their room & the same bed (even though they don't need to). The younger of the 2 isn't sure what she'll do when they no longer share, since they've been sharing space since they were toddlers.

I plan on having my kids share rooms, even if we have the space. I think it provides an opportunity for parents to teach sharing & having separate rooms all your childhood makes sharing space with room-mates & spouses later on, a big adjustment. I'm all for equipping kids for their future lives by helping them share spaces!

Nice job on the dresser! It looks like it had great bones to begin with. However, I agree with several comments about the teen room, accept I would maybe say younger (10-14 years old).

I love it! I would consider this nursery "gender-neutral". I think that "gender-neutral" nurseries go too feminine. I have also seen nurseries for boys that look like they were designed with Mommy in mind instead of baby.

@ GRACIAANN: I don't think you can ever go "too masculine" in a "gender neutral" nursery even for a baby girl. Baby girls do not need lace, ruffles, pink or anything of the sort to help them establish their identity as girls.

@ blandwagon: It's not unsettling or unusual for an 8 year old to have a double bed. Many young children have them. A lot of cribs convert into them, so countless toddlers are sleeping in them.
