I would truly change everything but the tiles! Add a fabulous shower curtain with prominent black and white, paint the walls, change the knobs. You really could work it to your advantage with a bit of creativity. I know that's not the answer you want but it seems the most sensible thing to do.

Love this post, Dabney and have been inspired by this whole series.

I'm a huge bargain shopper. I just don't feel good paying "retail" for anything. Often it's from a thrift store or Craigslist, but I'm no stranger to many of the big discount stores you mentioned.

Wanted to add that going into a Home Goods can be destructively seductive. One is lured by the cheap prices and may feel an urge to get it before it disappears, but when I do that, these are often the first items to go. Know thy style, and then go in search of the right things to fit *you*. Don't buy just because you get a great price, because you will just buy twice, and not save any money at all.

Great minds. ;-) This is a similar post I wrote from last year. Maybe people will find more ideas here:

@ernern, that is very sage advice! Our dresser has inverted scallop drawers and striations that could really lend themselves to a youthful multi-color project in the vain of the Finn Juhl above. It's such a tough call.

And @rmbhn, that's a great idea for a post. I'll look into it.

I was also going to say a white revival. And Euro-Scandi chic. I love most of the airy, understated, largely white homes I see on European sites. They seem to source a mix of inherited pieces, Oriental/Berber/Beni Ourain rugs, Danish modern and iconic 20th century pieces, antiques, and portraiture on the walls. It all seems effortless, and has been a huge source of inspiration for me. And yet it's a "look" that I don't see as much in stateside homes -- yet.

My weakness is clothes, specifically children's clothes. Not long ago I was reading on Design Mom that she couldn't believe her daughter Betty had EIGHT outfits. She thought that was way too many. 6-7 school outfits was the limit for each of her six children (and she judiciously uses hand-me-downs wherever possible). I couldn't believe it. My girls could go for weeks without doing laundry. It was very eye opening, and since reading that I've really cut down on my browsing/buying. I aim for something close next season for my older child.

Anyone know what kind of plant is in picture 13? I used to have one that I loved, and would like the opportunity to try again with another.

remy10 -- How frustrating! My only advice would be to start a new account using a different email address, and then manually recreate your old boards. Shouldn't be too difficult if you follow your old account, just time consuming. You'll have to build up followers again though if that's a concern to you.

roseisred, I'm sorry I didn't see this nine months ago. My 5-year-old daughter is doing the same thing. She probably puts out 10 drawings a day, and is constantly tacking up her work on her walls with washi tape I bought her. It seems really important to her, and she even wants to invite her friends over for a "gallery show." I say it's their space, and more importantly, their confidence and development that is the most important. It's critical to encourage them, even if it may intrude on our desires for a more calming space. This is something they need to do!

I'm so glad you wrote this post, as it's been very much on my mind this year.

I cannot completely understand the allure of designer trees. They too remind me of those that you see at banks and department stores. We recently moved back to my home town, and with that came the ornaments that I grew up with. We now have five generations of handmade, antique, and commemorative ornaments, and I wouldn't trade those memories for the world.

Oh Mari, my daughter is a patch-wearer too, and started both that and glasses at 15 months. We've gone in and out of success with this, but overall having beautiful patches that look like stickers works for us. We use Ortopads and they don't hurt like some others do. When we started, she would also put the patch on her dolls, sweet thing. Check my Pinterest board where I've been collecting more ideas on this: http://pinterest.com/itsyfactor/patch-glasses/
