Great selection of things you've pulled together here. Agree with the good textiles suggestion as well - you wash crib sheets constantly and getting ones that are really good quality is important I think. I have an Ikea crib and I did the same thing you suggest with a chair and sheepskin (got a rocker off Kijiji for $50 and spray painted it black). In retrospect if would have been nice to have something really comfy but it worked and was ok and we still use it now for stories. A Modern Nordic Nursery on a Budget |

Wow Darrenic what a super helpful and supportive post....are you serious?? Why do you think she's asking for help? Maybe because she is thinking of her child's needs? We clearly have opposing ideas on sleep training so I'm not even going to bother arguing with you but suffice it to say that not only do I completely disagree with you, your post is condescending, judgemental and well, sucky. Jess - ignore it. I totally sympathize with you because my 22 month old and soon to be born daughter will also be sharing a room - glad you posted this. Help For Toddler & Baby Sharing a Room? Your Swag desk is absolutely beautiful - I'm so jealous. With $67.62 budget, that's tough but you can do it, just need to be more creative. I've found some awesome mugs at thrift shops (Value Village, Sally Ann, an old office supply store), that would be great for holding pens/pencils, etc. I scored a vintage Queen Liz II coronation mug for $7 and a mug with my initial on it for 50 cents. I think some vintage mugs would look good with the modern lines of the desk. You could probably get a vintage Luxo lamp for not a bad price either. I scour Etsy for them a lot and you can get one that works, but a bit beat up, for $40ish. I would be tempted to paint the wall behind the desk something dark - you could try Home Depot, etc. for a mis-tint and then I'd take that cute print and reframe it in a massive oversized simple frame on top of the matte board (you can get 24x30 matte board at Michael's for $10). Keep it simple and make that print the focus of the whole room. Is that an old school Queen print I see on your desk too? I love it, I would even frame that in a similar way and put it on another wall in there. Good luck! Alison's January Cure: Week 2 January Cure Diaries |

I agree with the idea of savings bond and that sort of thing. My dad bought a bond for our daughter's first Christmas and he said he'd do it every year. I also wanted to get her some keepsakes even though she was only 7 months and had no concept of what was going on. Books are the best, every year I buy her classic and write a note in it (this year it's Where the Wild Things Are). I also got her a Bla Bla doll because she can keep that forever and it will hopefully be special because it was her first present from Santa. I also started a tradition of getting her Christmas pjs. Of course they don't need or want anything, but I think it's nice to have something to hold onto that they'll remember as their first Christmas gift. @Colourfiend - seriously? A newborn baby is not going to run around the house sticking its fingers into plug sockets, guzzle a bottle of Windex out of the cupboard, or pull down heirloom trinkets over their head. When the kid hits 7ish months I'm sure they'll realize that they need to change it up a bit. And why shouldn't parents want to create a nice space for their kid? What's wrong with that? I'm quite sure they realize the monumentality of bringing a human into the world and aren't just having a baby to decorate a nursery. The only real safety issue you need to be concerned about with a newborn is the sleeping situation, everything else can be dealt with later. Alexis & Josh Make Room for 3 House Tour |

Loads of great things about this space - love that it's stylish but not too predictable or "themey." But yeah, enjoy it now because once your kid is mobile, and especially when they hit 18 months, all your crap is going to be all over the place ie. books will constantly be taken off shelves, anything within reach will be taken/eaten/thrown/hidden/ripped, etc. And give me a break with the mobile people - it's PAPER, it's not made of lead and I'm pretty sure they were smart enough to securely hang it and not have it precariously dangling with dental floss. There is no need to childproof your house until your kid is mobile and really, I think people go overboard with it. Anyway, great tour and congrats on your soon to be baby! This is Apartment Therapy Family, formerly Ohdeedoh, so ummmm yah it's gonna be about family/kids related content. If you don't want to look at kids rooms then don't click on the link, why complain about it? I agree that a lot of the nurseries have similar things - not so much the furniture because obviously all nursery/kid rooms NEED a crib, change table, etc., but a lot feature a similar style (hand made mobile, book ledge, embroidery hoops, etsy prints, etc). But really, who cares, don't we all love being voyeurs into someone else's home? Bring it on, the My Room and Nursery Tours are the best part of this site, whether you like the style or not, it's still fun and inspirational or will at least give you an idea of what you don't want. By the way, this room is sweet, not my style, but I like reading how much thought and care people put into creating rooms for their kids. Emerson Kate's Soft, Vintage-Feel Nursery My Room |

Wasn't the original chair made of fibreglass and the newer ones are made of plastic? I bought a vintage fibreglass one for our living room (just a metal base though, not rocker, but same shell). It is a surprisingly comfortable and amazingly contoured chair - you have to sit in one to really understand how this fits to your body. Having said that, this would be a terrible chair for nursing or just as your nursery chair. The arms are too high and it is very small, like those of you that say you nursed toddlers in it? I don't understand how you could do this unless you sat forward and had your kid on an angle. It looks awesome, I agree, but I can't think of a worse chair for nursing. I bought an old school, wooden rocker off Kijiji and I also regret that - the arms were too high for nursing. ck8g0 - don't bother with it, get it for another space in your house, but I'm telling you that you'll regret it for your nursery. Also HEATHONIST: I agree that it's important to invest in your child's future, my parents also didn't save a penny for my education/life,etc., and I'll be paying my student loans until I'm at least 40, but there are things you need to get your kid that will only last a year - like a car seat and a crib. If someone can afford a $900 crib them I'm pretty sure that they're making enough money to save for their child's future. We're a generation that has seen, what is essentially, the collapse of the free market - I think we've all learned that living off of credit and living above your means is disastrous. I might splurge on something as frivilous as crib bedding but I sure as hell wouldn't let it be at the cost of my daughter's future education. What Was Your New Baby Splurge? Reader Survey |

I splurged on something that I swore I wouldn't because I thought it was a total waste of money: crib bedding. I ended up with a beautiful set from Plover Organic (blue pinwheels). Part of me sort of regrets it in that it was really expensive and now that we have another on the way, and they will share a room, I don't know if I want to shell out for another matching set. They will both need duvets within the next few years too as the quilt is just a bit too small to really snuggle up with. It has held up really well though and the quilt will be a keepsake for my daughter forever. Our big ticket items were generously bought for us as gifts as my daughter was the first grandchild for everyone - Quinny Buzz stroller, Maxi Cosi car seat and the Ikea Gulliver crib. My dear girlfriends all pitched in for a gift card that I used to buy an organic crib mattress (it covered almost all of it). The other splurge was a Petunia Pickle Bottom Scout diaper bag - probably one of the best things we bought. Everything else I pretty much got off Kijiji. One thing I do regret is the rocker/glider. Because I spent a lot on bedding I got a rocker off Kijiji for $50 which I spray painted black and covered with a sheepskin. The problem was the arms were way to high and once my baby grew I had to sit on an angle to feed her. Also it wasn't terribly comfortable. If you're not co-sleeping I really think investing in a glider is a good thing - I didn't think so when I was pregnant. But I still use that rocker for reading stories and I'll use it with the new baby and I really wish I had something wider and more comfortable. I also agree with others about a dishwasher - if money were no object I would have a stainless Miele in a heartbeat. What Was Your New Baby Splurge? Reader Survey |

I actually just registered so I could comment on this room. It is one of the best baby/kids rooms I've seen ever. Rachelle I think we're kindred design spirits! I get that Scandinavian awesome-ness isn't everyone's style (it's def. mine!), but why not design your kids room in a way that you love too? And what about this room is sad? The perfectly sized bed with adorable pillows? The awesome, amazingly designed, yellow rocker? The bunny light that she probably pats every night? The little desk made just to her size/height and filled with inspiring images? Just because she hasn't Disney Princessed/Fisher Priced the crap out of her kid's room doesn't mean it's 'sad.' I love every single thing about this room from the wallpaper and amazing white floors to the carefully selected keepsake items. I love that you picked lamps that are special and unique - things that she'll probably keep forever. Unlike the above comments I think it means something when a parent thinks carefully about their child's room and selects a few, well made, beautiful pieces that will potentially last a life time. I did the same for my daughter - she doesn't have a lot of stuff but what is in her nursery is beautiful and is hers for life (ie. a Marimekko bowl for her soothers, an Iittala Aalto vase for jewellery). Later in life she can use those things for whatever she wishes knowing that I carefully and lovingly selected those things for her. While I can't speak for Rachelle, I feel like that's what she's done here - the art she could frame and have in her room always, the mountain pouf (LOVE this!) would work as a footstool when she's a teen, the bunny lamps are kitsch enough to work in any room and are awesome for any aged child, etc. I think this is a beautiful, modern, thoughtful, well designed room - love it! Also - is the little cloud with raindrops on the desk from the Butter Flying on Etsy? Amazing, amazing room. Kenzie's Fresh and Fabulous Room Kids Room Tour |
