Besides the fact that the Laundromat is a SOUL SUCKING place, I find that my clothes frequently take on the smell of the previous users' detergent. gross. ick. no way. w/d every time. and then some.

when i finished grad school and found myself broke and unemployed, it was summertime and very hot. I had no air conditioner. i would sit in a cold bath, and on top of my mini ironing board placed upside down across the tub, write cover letters. this was pre-internet so while i didn't have to worry about my laptop getting wet, i did often smudge the newspaper.

I have made friends at each stage of my life. now in my early forty's I have friends from high school, college, grad school, and from almost every job I have had. What I mean by "friend" is someone I can call in an emergency, most I would be happy to leave my daughter with. That said, I do not have many friends and generally don't like people. that said, each new friendship came without effort. I was otherwise engaged in doing something I loved--working, learning etc.--and the "friends" came naturally. So, yes, it's possible to make new friends at any stage. just do things you love and the crowd will follow.

My maternal grandmother allowed me to do anything in her room while my mother was the exact opposite--I rarely was allowed in her room. The weird thing was it felt odd seeing everything my grandmother had while I still feel like I do not know who my mother was. As a child all i did was want to get in but now I wish I saw less of grandma and more of mom. I suppose a happy medium would have been best. For my daughter (who is only 2) we have an invitation only poilcy. we'll see how this evolves as she gets older. but let it be known that we also live in a small apartment so the invitations usually come on days when we are stuck inside.

I second the suggestion of bringing someone along--someone that does not have to live there. they can look at a place objectively. I always want to feel the place and this makes me overlook things. like the fact that the former tenant had space heaters in all the rooms. so while I love the "feel" of the place, I freeze my a$% off each night.

if it's a small 2-3 family house, ask about all the spaces in the house and who has access to them. We almost signed a lease for a wonderful apartment until we learned that the landlord's collage age nephew from oversees occasionally came for visits and was allowed to stay in the basement (no, not the basement apartment, the basement). we could only imagine what this young man would be up to in a forgein country with no supervision (landlords did not live in building).

i love the wall, the color the new rug so much. I feel like the gallery wall of pictures competes with the wainscoting wall too much. i wonder if one large pic or a more messy version of a gallery wall would look better--it;s just too much geometry for me. but otherwise, fantabulous!

I SO WANT TO DO THIS! My landlord has given me permission to remove the doors but not the frame. I'm stumped. Can I add a tension curtain rod around the frame? adding to the complexity are the floor to celiing tiles so no drilling into the wall. My kid is outgrowing her bathtub and i need to get her in "the big tub" but the doors make half the tub inaccessable to me and therefore unsafe for my daughter (i can't reach her if she's onthe far end of the tub).

Been there! love the comments--there are some really well-worded responses that I will save if ever I am in this situation again. A few NEW thoughts:

Confirm that they have carpeting and drapes--if they don't any regular noise from you (or the street) will be amplified. They have to try to allieviate the issue too.

while this next suggestion might anger them more, suggest magnesium supplements. A magnesium deficiency can lead to increased sensitivity to noise. A friend of mine started taking it when she found her kids to be "too much" and all is good in her home now. Lots of info about this on the web.

I like fabric.com. They ship pretty quickly, offer you a coupon after you place an order, have just started a points/rewards system and have their own version of 'pintrest' so you can keep track of what fabrics you like. sure, they don't have everything but what store ever does?

They recently sent me the wrong fabric--a different colorway. IMHO, an easy mistake to make. I called up and they sent out the correct fabric right away--I got it in two days at no cost to me and I got to keep the 'mistake' fabric.

I did something similar in the kitchen of my last apartment. I collected alot of those free postcards-as-advertisments found in bars and cafes (at least in NYC) and papered one wall with them. The wall was at the end of a rectangular shapped kitchen. It had a window in the middle that looked directly into a neighbor's apartment and their fire escape. I wanted to create a wall that got your attention so you wouldn't look out. I think I achieved it. :) So needless to say, I love this!

i recently took my 18 month old daughter to a 2 year old's birthday party. as we were eating the cake we were like "what's that taste?" it was peanut butter! no one told us. thankfully we did not have peanut allergies but this is the other extreme. I hope we can all meet in the middle on this one.
