A lot of potential here. I really don't understand the logic behind all the random pieces of fabric.

@UrbanCricket: I (and I'm the question asker) don't think it's a weird question. I needed a dresser and I found on on CL. It was a good deal ($20!) and good quality (wood). The bones are good, but the finish is fug and I want to change that. Seems like a typical question to me.

@SALLYIGTG Thanks for pointing that out. It's definitely the pine version.

@SherryBinnh I don't understand. What is a "clear color" isn't that an oxymoron? Is that a type of paint? I'm a n00b!

This could not have come at a better time. I am moving into my first real place out after living in a college dorm for 4 years. Do I need 20,000 pens? NO! And they are easily replaceable! Seriously, thank you for these tips.

We use the blue painter's tape to label everything in the fridge---don't know about the freezer though.

Definitely DVR. I have a 10 y/o sister who doesn't know life without it. One time I told her,"Kelly did you know that you used to not be able to pause TV?" And she was like,"NO WAY." So yea, that's something.

@CMCINNYC--Good point on the drinking thing! My parents were the same way and when I went to college I was WAY more tame when it came to drinking that my roommate who came from a super-strict household.

I am 22 (recent college grad, living on her own) and am surprisingly independent even though my parents never overloaded me with chores.
I have never mowed a lawn, and I only started doing my own laundry with regularity when I was a senior in high school.
THAT SAID, I can cook, clean (I am a complete neat-freak, I used part of my first paycheck to buy a quality vacuum), and generally take care of myself. On the flipside, my sister is almost 21 and completely helpless.

Chores are helpful, but a lot of it comes with the general "free-range parenting" style that my parents adopted that work so well with me. All in all, who knows! I'm not a parent yet so we'll see what I'll be saying in 8 years!

Shoot. I meant to say "Like" to @michellem9's comment. I think these shades are ghastly.

NEVER check your jewelry is something that I've been taught and abide by. Really, you shouldn't check anything super-valuable. Not checking chargers is a good idea.

Black and white is great for babies! That's why mobiles come in black and white, because initially they can't see the full color palette.

I really like this, and it can easily transform into an elementary, middle and then high school girl room.

I love it! Especially the black and white chevron rug. That contrasts fabulously with the all the baby pink.

Question: How is the chalkboard headboard? I wouldn't want a kid getting chalk all over her bed linens and it looks like the pillows are destined to turn into accidental erasers.

I have been taught to put glasses face down, even if in a closed cupboard. My Mom said it's to prevent dust and now I do it out of habit. But face up doesn't bother me or anything.

I notice that you are hanging on to some boxes (on top of your fridge). You really don't need to keep them, they are a total space sucks. If you are a person who must keep the original boxes for all of your appliances and what not at least break them down and hide them under a couch or behind a wall unit or something.
