Word of caution: Verify what your building/board requires before doing any renovations (check to see if they have an alterations agreement). For small jobs I would recommend Toby at Betterbuilt: www.betterbuiltnyc.com or Bill at Old City Construction: billtancredi at gmail dot com. They are not the absolute cheapest, but I have found that it is much better to pay a little more for good craftsmanship and communication. It ultimately saves on time, money and headaches. I tried looking into this using a kit for greenhouses (I've seen it done quite sucessfully by an architecture firm in France), but the manufacturers explicitly said they wouldn't talk to me if I was considering for residential (they were worried about thier liabillity, I take it) - word to the wise. Thank you for all the great support! We were really happy to be chosen for the semi-finalist pool so we could have the opportunity to show everyone more photos. For us, our loft is a very personal experiment in living small and within a tight budget. It was never really intended to be seen by so many people, so we're excited to have gotten such positive feedback. There were soooo many other great entries this year and we found a lot of inspiration from them, so winning first is a great honor for us. Only voted cool because it's unclear if the renter(s) actually created the loft spaces themselves. Kudos to you if you were able to convince your landlord to build the platforms though. If the apartment came 'as is' architecturally, I really feel that you lucked out - the apartment isn't big enough for your furniture to be organized in too many other ways. The decor certainly has a sense of playfulness and pushes the nautical theme in a certain direction, but it's verging on kitchy - a bit of a one-liner. It would be nice to see a little more refinement. Sure, blue = water, but you can communicate this theme in subtler ways - perhaps with light, transparency, materials actually used on boats - lacquered teak? White canvas? What about built-in furniture with hidden storage that's so common on sailboats? Maybe you were on a budget as many New Yorkers are, but there are many other ways to say nautical than with a lot of blue paint and a model boat. Apartment Therapy New York \| East #23: The S.S.
