The noise issue suggests the building isn't all that well constructed in the first place, and my guess is you're just as likely to run into noisy neighbors next door instead of above you if you move up.

Just to re-iterate what a poster said above about babies and space: My wife and I managed a 500sqft one bedroom with our two kids for about a year (we probably could have gone another year, maybe two in that setup). As long as they are still in cribs (first two years or so is typical), you can make it work with about 3ftx5ft (probably less) of sleeping space per child.

Looking forward to hearing all the different solutions to Problem #4. Our little guy thinks he owns the whole building, and can easily escape our apartment because of the lever-style handle on the front door. Not good when I'm rocking his little sister to sleep in the other room and I think I hear the front door click open.

I love it. This feels like the inside of the MacMurray Ranch (Russian River Valley vineyard), a very campy, 1950's style retreat/lodge. I've got a space I'd like to use it on out in the country. The green feel seems a perfect fit.
