YOU'RE looking for a way to display them? Does he care? Has he added any ideas to the process? It's his collection. How did he have them at his place? Why does he collect them? Those would be keys to better understanding a display.
Does he like the colors or shapes? I'd go with the ideas presented about having 6 or so out at a time or maybe more in different rooms paired with things YOU like in the same color.
If it is a record of places he visited, how about some kind of picture box with a cool/artsy map of the state/city etc..with a row of the glasses along the bottom?
I like the magnet idea @justanotherculturalreference but that depends on adhering the magnets to the glass which is not the best material to adhesive...it could damage the glass.

Wow. Stylish and sleek, it's looks pretty expensive, though.

What's on the other side of those walls? Could you cut into them and put glass block in there? Not the whole thing, but just in some spots to let light through.
Otherwise, I like the idea of potted trees along that wall, just to soften it, and as nice as it is to walk barefoot in the grass, you might consider losing as least SOME of it. You could also do a small water feature in a corner too.

I also don't think the minimal art is meant for kids. Kids aren't the people designing all these apartments with WHITE EVERYTHING. I think these are a nice homage to childhood favorites that fits with some people's minimalistic home design.

There are some Expedit haters out there, just because they are so prevalent these days. They are hard to beat though, without going the carpenter route.
They are relatively inexpensive, the shelves are spaced far enough apart that they won't bow under the weight of the records, and they have a (small) variety of colors. I would add one small addendum to Luccella's comment "and if you align the front edges at the front of the shelf, they collect little dust." and that is, if you aren't thrilled with the idea of staring at rows and rows of vinyl, you can line the LPS along the BACK edge of the shelves and have a few inches of shelf for little things to display. It really helps to break up the wall, especially if you have several lined up next to each other. Ikea also has inserts (drawers, 4-way splits, etc) if you want to break things up further. It just depends if you're willing to sacrifice the record storage for aesthetics.
I would recommend doing a purge if at all possible. The problem with records in boxes is that you forget why you saved things.
Finally, you might contact Oliver Wang at soul-sides about his experience. I can't find any pictures that I remember seeing on his site, but he had a friend help him build custom shelves, so he can probably warn/help you if you go that route.
Good luck
Sean
