It's the Little Things:
5 Ways to Spend Less & Reduce Clutter

bklyntgr - do have any idea how hard Rachel must have worked to be a "tenured cellist in a world-class orchestra"? Having a great job that she must have worked her tushy off for since she was a child (think of all those hours of practice) hardly qualifies to be dismissed by you as "good fortune." And as for "rich," I know nothing about Rachel beyond the accompanying text in the story, but it says she lived for 8 years in a cramped space above a restaurant. Does that sound rich to you? Save your sour grapes for some other time.

I think the entire apartment is exquisite and doesn't need a thing added to it. It took my breath away it is so perfect. Rachel, don't listen to those who think space has to be cluttered up to be lived in. Your restraint gives you space to breathe and to be filled with your music.

The comments really show how many people just look at photos but don't bother to read to get the story or details. Zheesh, before you put in your two cents, read the text so you don't sound redundant.

Sean, this is expertly done. Don't listen to the negative AT posters - it seems to be a tradition here for posters to run with a single negative point until others are ready to scream. I looked at the images and did not even notice the filters - it just read "moody" to me and I liked it. (And if AT approved the pics, then that is AT's problem, not yours.)

I actually have a bigger issue with Canada being considered "International." Seriously? I know, I know, it's a different country but our cultures are not that different, especially when it comes to decor. I don't feel the decor styles are distinguishable in terms of "Canadian" or "American," but I do think style changes from city to city, just as much between SF and NY as between NY and Toronto or Toronto and SF or Dallas. Chicago, Miami, etc.
I know if the category were "North American" then there is the problem of Mexico, which to me is International - such a different culture - so I don't really see an answer to the problem. I just know that when I click International I expect to see tours that don't look they are in the US.

None of this makes me love Sean's place any less - it's fantastic, regardless of category.

To continue on the whole "how can you claim grandniece status!" thing, it's relevant that the Nakashima firm is now run by George's daughter Mira, who is Lindsay's (the homeowner's) aunt, and a close one, judging by the fact that Mira custom designed a desk for Lindsay's son Hugo. And Mira's son is also part of the firm - he would be Lindsay's (homeowner's) first cousin, as are Lindsay's uncle, great-aunt, get the idea? This is clearly a multi-generational family that has remained connected and for the purposes of the AT audience, one thing that unites them is the umbrella of the Nakashima design name. So yeah, I'd say that was a pretty relevant and pertinent detail to add to the biography above. And for the record, my mother's two sisters have been so present in my sons's lives that, instead of ever using the term "great aunt", they just think they have 4 grandmothers!

2. Silent Mode . . . switch off the sound and ringers from the Settings > Sounds screen...

Or you could just flick the silent button on the side of the phone.

@DUANE HILL, read the accompanying text before making comments that make it obvious you did not. That's why a story goes with the pictures.

Agree with posters who lamented either no photos or poor photos of things specifically discussed in the interview. I never understand why shelter mags and sites do that to their readers. Not the homeowner's falut - it's an AT thing. Please fix.

Also agree that this striking flat needs some editing, esp the chest of drawers with the cash register that doesn't even fit fully on its top - yikes, that really bugged me. Many accessories look a bit more like props than meaningful possessions. The bedroom was nicer because it was less cluttered.

The ladder shelving really doesn't work in this space.

But most of all, ee gads, the cat near the open highrise window? My heart jumped. City vets will tell you that the number one cause of emergency visits is cats who go off balconies or out windows in high rises. They are carried up to their apartments and don't have a full sense of how high they are. Glad to know screens are usually on the windows - a prudent and responsible move by the homeowner so full kudos for that -- but for future photo shoots, Capone should be kept in another room out of harm's way. One startling sound or movement and he could have reacted in the wrong direction - out the window. It looks like you are up high enough that he wouldn't survive the accident. Better safe than sorry.

Color-coded books. Really? Really? All that says to me is "non-readers" who see books as nothing more than props. I'm a scholar and my thousands of books are organized mainly by period and then by author. Do I know what color each spine is? Yes, of course, but would you color code your kitchen cupboard and drawers? All brown things here (potatoes, wooden spoons, napkin holder, parchment paper). All blue items here (mixing bowl, butter dish, spatula). All green stuff here (lettuce, oven glove, can opener, asparagus). Ha! Ridiculous for anybody who actually uses the stuff.

I too thought both rooms were nice, but the current iteration is best. Great new chairs, rug is gorgeous and soothing, and that "pre-war European hospital" cabinet is GORGEOUS. Room looks stylish and confident. I'd love to eat dinner in there. Well done.

@rose123 - hilarious! you made me laugh out loud.

Laurainalameda, what a great suggestion to use cedar chips! I'm conscious of not adding more toxins to my environment, so I'd shy away from using foam or styrofoam peanuts. Some cast-off cotton clothing or rags makes good filler too. Some pouf companies sell just the cover and advise you to fill with rags or old clothes. But the cedar chips - genius!

@magpiec - don't apologize for ranting. You have some seriously legitimate gripes and it sounds like you need to have a talk with your husband about his setting some boundaries for his family. They aren't your family so it shouldn't be your responsibility. Way too awkward. But you are being taken advantage of by some unbelievably thoughtless and/or rude people. You can choose to let them get away with it, or not. Don't suffer in silence (or only vent it to us).

And btw, I LOVE these houseguest/host-from-hell stories - they are always SO entertaining! Rarely do I sit and read through all the comments on a post but these were some great entertainment.

P.S. Totally agree that *buying a gift* for the homeowners when you've done them the favor of housesitting (presumably for free) is just way over the top and downright weird.

Ditto what MSSQUAREPANTS said. No clue how this place is laid out, nor where those stacks of books might be. Talented designer, lovely woman, darling last photo (with photog) but please, AT, make it a tour, not a collection of loosely connected vignettes.

Anybody else notice the irony of -- in what has basically turned into a discussion on the evils of mindless consumerism -- two commenters wanting to know where to get the lamps in the photo?

5 Things I Learned on My Summer Staycation
7/27/12 1:24 PM

@HEYPIELADY - nice reframing, and I couldn't agree more. The consumerism is so beaten into us that having less is typically presented as some kind of deprivation rather than an acceptance and effort to live joyfully and mindfully with whatever we do have. And whether we have what we have by choice or by a reduced budget.

(I'm not talking about people who cannot afford the basic needs of food and shelter, but I also think that people in that situation are unlikely to be online reading AT posts).
