Art isn't an investment, it's a speculative purchase, that may or may not increase in value. Investments pay dividends, like stocks or real estate rental properties. Don't let any art dealer fool you into thinking it's an investment. It's taste- specific speculation. Get Smart: Real Life Advice for Collecting & Investing in Art on a Budget |

If you're gardening in the ground, not in containers, and you have deep rooted plants like melons that need a good soaking, the old water containers can be a great tool. Drill tiny holes all around the container, and then dig a hole big enough to bury the container except with the neck sticking out of the ground. Position it near your planted vegetables. Put the holey container in the ground, and fill in the area around the container really well with dirt. When you water your plants, just fill up the underground container with water. It will seep through the holes and really saturate your plant's deep roots very efficiently. Wait 90 days, and eat melons. Reuse Ideas for 5-Gallon Water Jugs? Good Questions |

I like the color choice a lot. It's hard to find people that will do children's furniture in colors other than primary or pastel, and I think it makes kids spaces seem more sophisticated without being inappropriate. Also, way to go on the three coats of clear coat over the paint! That will protect and enhance your investment in time and resources on this re-do. Before & After: IKEA LÄTT Hack Chris Loves Julia |

I just read the link, and yes, sanding is the worst part -- because it's important, and regardless of the picture of the can of primer on the how-to-page, this looks rough to me. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I expect AT to have higher standard for a before and safer. Before & After: From Antique Dry Sink into Changing Table Taste{full} Life |

The painted-over hinges and wood showing through around the edges of the paint looks sloppy. I could be mistaken, but I don't see much evidence of sanding, primer, or time spent in a piece of furniture you will put your naked baby on over and over again. While I'm going to avoid the pros and cons of the aesthetics of painting over antique finished wood, I'm not going to avoid saying that this looks like something I would have done in college while I was drinking. Sorry, I don't dig it. Before & After: From Antique Dry Sink into Changing Table Taste{full} Life |

Lists like these make people so self-conscious about their decisions, afraid to make choices, and self-loathing over decisions they've already made. DIY gives people the power to improve their lives through real invest in time with their space and possessions, but criticisms that denigrate a person's accomplishments because they're not "magazine worthy" undermine the value that people get out of taking risks and making their spaces and possessions truly unique.
