Love this! I especially like the blackboard and the dresser and the "No Whining" sign. As a parent, this is a fun (tongue-in-cheek) item. Arden's White & Black Wonderland Kids Room Tour |

Really nice room. I love the white and wood combo, and grapevine & fairy lights. It feels like a sweet, relaxing space. Annie's Beach House Bedroom My Bedroom Retreat Contest |

Lori has a beautiful home, and there is a lot to look at. But I don't think the photography of this home does it justice. I understand that textiles are central to her decorating style, but soooo many close-ups of pillows, wall hangings, and other textiles. And in 53 (FIFTY-THREE!) photos, there's only one with the barest hint of the kitchen, and no pics of the girls' rooms, bathrooms, laundry area. I would have liked to have seen more. Holler, there's no difference between kids' beds and adult beds other than sizes. In fact, when our kids outgrew their crib-that-converted-to-a-toddler bed, we skipped over the next kid sizes and went straight for full size beds. Sure, the beds were roomy when the kids were really small, but the full size beds will see them through high school (and beyond). Saved a ton of money. The only reason I could see buying a single/twin size bed would be if you didn't have room for something larger. Design for the Ages: Basics + New Accessories for Room Design Over Time |

c in westchester, I love orange and pink together! While I usually favor earth tones--lots of green--I often accent with orange and purple. Sometimes, orange and pink--especially in a textile--is a better hit, especially a darker orange and hotter pink. I mix them in the garden all the time too. Adding Color: Hints of Pink |

I really like this. The whole apartment has a great vibe, and I love the way the owners work with the natural light. I'm glad to see a home that looks like the owners decorate with their own style, not the trend-of-the-moment. Love the mishmash of books, too. That Tom Robbins section looks like my own, though I'm wondering where your copies of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and Still Life With Woodpecker have wandered off to...hitchhiking back to the PNW with Spoon and Can o' Beans? This is an interesting post. I don't know that my kids' rooms were "sophisticated" but they did include a mix of what a child would need as well as things that were appealing (and comfortable) to me (since I spent A LOT of time there!). If it's not Drexel, it's probably Dixie. I had a whole bedroom suite of almost identical furniture. 1970s. Supposed to look French provincial. White laminate top, and "gilded" drawers and legs. If you don't like the look, paint it up. Not likely to be a valuable antique. That's probably original hardware too. The stuff was well made, but not truly fancy. I see it second-hand all over now. If it were me, though, I'd probably go either look-at-me with glossy black (with gold highlights?) or gray for something more subtle. How To Spruce Up Craigslist Vanity? Good Questions |

Krikkit, I hear you about how hard it can be to create a new network. When we moved to a city where we had no friends or family, I would go places (with my toddler) where I thought I'd run into people with whom I might have something in common. Might have been a coffee shop or a bakery. I ended up meeting my closest friend at the natural foods store. I watched her walk in with a kid about the same age as mine and walked up to her and initiated a conversation. It was awkward at first, but turned out to be great. If you go to the store in the evening, or a cafe, or the bookstore, just take a chance and strike up a conversation. Book club. Church/synagogue/other spiritual group (be sure their membership person knows that you want to meet people as well as the fact that if you get sick you will need some help). Even if you can't attend daytime, organized events with your toddler, you might talk with the contact people for some of those and see if they know of an evenings/weekends group that gets together more informally. Also, if your toddler is in pre-school, you should ask the teacher(s) or director how you can get involved, even with your schedule. Maybe there's a project or an event you can help with where you can meet people. Finally, get to know your neighbors! Don't feel like the only people you can/should befriend are also parents of small children. Mommy's Not Allowed to Get Sick: How to Be Sick When You Can't Call in Sick |

Several months ago, I did a major clothing purge. I didn't expect to have much to get rid of since I don't have a huge wardrobe, but was pleasantly surprised at how much I was ready to let go. The thing that finally did it: I tried on absolutely everything and used a full-length mirror to evaluate. There were plenty of things I loved--the fabric or the pattern--things that were comfortable. But if the item wasn't flattering, or it was comfy but too beat up to wear in public, I said goodbye. It's amazing how much stuff you can give away when you're honest with yourself! Also, my husband and I share a dresser and a closet (and there's a roughly 12" diameter vent pipe running up through my side). If our clothes don't fit in the dresser or the closet, they don't stay since there's nowhere else to store them. Day 13: Weekend Chores - Flowers & Bedroom Apartment Therapy January Cure |

I really like the new space. To me, it reads more Scandinavian than anything. I like the way the curtain pattern ties in with the floors and counters, and the rustic feel of the walls playing off the more industrial table. NIce job! Before & After: A Renovated Breakfast Nook Old House New Tricks |

I agree that a jolt of color would be great in your nook. My suggestion would be a simple drum shade pendant, but with a colorful print. You could pull colors out of your area rug, but could pick a pattern that reads anything from MCM to Victorian. I second the idea of some sort of rug under the little, round table. I'd choose colors to coordinate with the other rug, but not overpower it. What Style of Fixture To Hang over the Dining Table? Good Questions |
