I'm curious about budget, too (for reno, not decor). Very lovely home you have made!

The after is lovely, very light and bright and airy. Your fabric choices are very now, and fun yet not overly bright. Nicely done, especially as a side project with a fulltime job taking most of your time! I would personally opt to rethink the nailheads, but would also opt to say so in a kind way :)

(Oh, I am a freelance designer, and was a designer well before having kids. I feel very fortunate that I could bend this career to fit the above for a few years! But it's true, many WAH-parents can't set own hours...)

Making it Work: Working From Home
With Kids

I am a WAHM, and this is the first year I feel basically sane again -- because my guys are both in school! I wouldn't trade the past 7 years for anything BUT it was a crazy juggling act with many "workdays" crammed into 9pm-12am sessions staggered with 3am-6am sessions coupled with passing the baton back and forth evenings and weekends with my FT working hubby so that much of the time we didn't get a lot of time as a whole family (lots of mommy time, some daddy time, not a great deal of both at same time). For a couple of years I "time-shared" a nanny with 4 other families and we had her 1 day a week. Helpful. All of this sounds crazy, but the ultimate goal was this: raise our kids during their baby/toddler/preschool years as much as possible ourselves, rather than outsourcing to daycare. I'm so so glad we did. You never get those years back, and if there is any way to make it work -- even if you feel a bit bonky at times -- it really and truly is worth it. Teaching and guiding your kids is an amazing process. But it is far from easy, and I only now feel the return to true work-life balance. But, everyone is different -- some will find it easier, some more difficult. I really do think everyone would find it worthwhile, though.

A nice addition to all the fine approaches above, using one wire and one nail: put either little rubber feet or that blue tacky putty at the bottom corners on the back of the frame so that you can position your piece and it won't slide/shift afterwards.

Lovely work, and nice to hear the designer speak about his philosophy and creative process! Love the year of images as catalyst for so much good work.

Really love the garden with all its nooks and details - really seems to have evolved in an organic and unstudied way!

It's the journey not the destination, in all things! People evolve, and our spaces do, too, to reflect that. The slow movement reminds us of this, and in a culture of instant gratification and fast info, travel, everything, it's a welcome reminder. Slow decorating has my vote :)

Sorry for the multi posts, but one more thing: we have two couches, one w/light colored canvas slipcovers and one w/dark nubby textured microfiber. You really can't see the scratches on the microfiber, whereas the slipcovered one looks terrible.

p.s. a motivated cat can go anywhere: we once had to medicate a very stubborn cat who was able to escape us by RUNNING ACROSS THE TOP OF A POSTER that was simply thumbtacked to the wall. They go where they want to go!!

Learn to love the scratched furniture look :) One of my cats actually scratches the couch when inside, and hangs on the window screens when outside, to get our attention and let us know he wants in/out. *sigh* We keep trying to retrain him, but he has his own training regiment he's sticking to, and we're obviously his subjects. We have never had luck training our cats. Dogs, yes. Cats, no.

Some things that do actually work for us, in between the couch getting shredded so my cat can say "outside, please":
- diagonal scratching post with liberal catnip thrown in
- map out where they like to lay down, and then position attractive throws on those spots
baskets of blankets or socks for lounging
- covered litter box, turned toward wall and under ikea side table, hardly noticeable
- scoopable pine litter, better for air quality AND cat health (they won't breathe/ingest clay particulates, which used to make one of my cats vomit like crazy)
- if you have a dog and a dog bed, the cats will take over...if not, consider getting a dog and dog bed, it gives the cats a sense of place and hierarchy which they enjoy ;)
- DEFINITELY get one of the pet vacuums--i got a dyson 6 years ago and it has lasted, whereas the other vacs that preceded it each invariably lasted a year and then choked to death on pet hair
- ummmm...enjoy the imperfectly perfect home full of love your pets contribute to!

I've always loved old bookcases that hide secret doors, very victorian and oh so mysterious. Multi-function and hidden household items pique my interest in a similar way. I'd kind of love a slim tv that doubles as a mirror and hides a safe or bookcase. Or maybe a tv that functions as a window covering at night (since that's when we do our minimal tv watching). Though I think the ultimate would be to untether the tv from the wall entirely, maybe one day a high res projection system built into our phones or tablets and you just set it up when needed. It's good to keep thinking out of the box when approaching new design ideas!

I have a love/hate relationship with my fixer-upper that has lost value, but I'll focus on the love: Since buying in 2005, this house has seen us marry, have children, welcome new friends and pets. We have laughed over silly jokes, cried over losing loved ones, hosted guests for wedding and births and funerals. We have run through the sprinklers, fed deer with our annual failure of a garden, blew bubbles, wrote on the patio with chalk, assembled cribs and bunk beds and bookshelves and desks. We have thrown birthday and holiday parties, camped in the yard, camped in the living room, painted pictures. We have worked until well after midnight, watched favorite movies, danced in the living room. I could go on- but you get the point. I hope your houses are also your HOMES. It takes the sting out of it being a 'bad investment'.

I like the cabin look of untreated wood. Hanging some art and mirrors would brighten and give some more personality. I actually think your mom's decor is just fine, too...I can imagine that if all that furniture was showcased and called granny chic vintage whatever, that comments about it would run more positive. Funny. It's cozy and sweet. And unstudied. Authentic, not labored over to give the impression of authenticity!

I've thought of doing this, but don't think my little old house is strong enough. Retrofitting would likely be out of the budget. But <3 #10: I want the green roof AND the goats on top!

I was a teen a fairly long time ago, but even I remember what it was like. The makeover was not done to impress us, it was done to make a super cute and trendy-fun-now room for a teenager who will enjoy this thoroughly. I say the mom who redid the beds knows her child and did a fantastic job!
