I've had the same experience that mginwa mentions. A moving company came and did a thorough price estimate based the items we told them we'd be moving, which is calculated on weight. The companies don't charge more then the estimate; it's in their best interest to get the weight as close to the right number without going over. So apparently the estimates get pretty good at it. It was free. Their moving services ended up being significantly more expensive that the actual method we used (ABF's UPack services, which I highly recommend for ease and cost with a long distance move) but the estimate was useful. ABF calculates price based on space needed and if you over-estimate and don't need as much as you thought, they recalculate the price to what you actually used. They also functioned as storage our containers while we looked for a place to live in our new city. Good luck!
