A family member recently placed their private island up for sale... it's located near Sanibel and Ft. Myers Florida. It's one of the few privately owned islands in the area and it has a fantastic house on it.

Wish I could say that I found one of the alterna-litters to be a good choice. But my finicky cat (who is a twin to your russian blue) goes outside the box with anything other than EverClean. It too has past the "I cannot smell your animals" test with friends and family. Unfortunately the cost is high but worth it.

I think a good coat of paint in a color that mimics the rest of your new place will make it "feel" more like part of your home. Also, there is nothing wrong in getting a sink that suites your desires rather than the builders. You live in a big enough city where you could probably post the sink/cabinet for sale on Craigslist and use the money you get for it to buy a sink that you actually like.

You may also need to try using light bulbs that cast a whiter light. Tungsten lighting gives off a yellow hue and a lot of CFLs cast a pinkish hue which can change the appearance of any color.

I think that the one thing that will turn me away from a store, whether it's a chain or boutique is customer service. I have been having a TERRIBLE time with a couch that I ordered from Restoration Hardware that arrived in the completely wrong color and fabric and the RH customer service reps have treated me like it was my fault -- that after charging me over $1500 for the 50% deposit -- without one apology or kind explanation. I will never, ever shop RH again no matter how wonderful the quality of their pieces.

There's a deli in nearby oak park (outside chicago) that serves a grill cheese made with swiss and harvarti on rye bread with grilled onions and garlic mayo in the center and it is outstanding. Okay, now I'm hungry.
