How airtight are these? They're adorable, but I would be concerned about the aforementioned mice and spices going stale...

I've been wanting to do this for my grandmother since I first read about Tastebooks...her shoofly pie recipe is nearly an heirloom, it's so well-loved, and would absolutely be the first of her recipes I would preserve.

Whole Foods in Boston stopped using plastic bags March 1 - it's sad to stand in check out and see how many people didn't catch the hint, and are still either asking for plastic, or gobbling up their double-bagged paper bags, instead of carrying their own.

I went to a screening of King Corn in Boston in March, and it is, in fact, hilarious. It channels Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma" pretty heavily - Pollan makes an appearence - and apparently the the two works were in progress together (so maybe they really channel each other, but I read Pollan first).

The film is really excellent, and everyone should try to see it. It highlights facts without coming off as insulting or intrusive, and really just lays things out for the reader to draw conclusions. What's more, it has the stamp of approval of the people in Iowa who participated in the project.

Track it down if you can! It's worth the effort, and highly entertaining even if you are already knowledgeable on the subject.

I've become arguably addicted to Siggi's since trying it a few weeks ago...I attempted to switch back to my cheaper standard, and instead found myself justifying the cost so long as the yogurt constitutes lunch. Incredible stuff.

Does straining via coffee filters produce similar results? It's a tempting experiment, given the cost of Siggi's...
