Beth,

Not a big deal but your attribution of the first image to Laura's Art Fusion is incorrect. It is actually my apartment submitted for 2008's Small Cool Contest. See link below: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/small-cool-2008-midwest/midwest-14-annies-logan-square-home-048199

Thanks!

More countertop space --- especially next to my stove where there is currently a stupidly-located access to the furnace which prevents any kind of real cabinet or countertop being placed there.

can you post a picture of your house? the stone lintels and black shutters in the photos you posted provide a necessary contrast to the large expanses of terracotta color. as long as your home has some sort of similar effect to break up the monotony, i'd say go for it!

speaking of cuts outside my comfort zone, i was all set to make braised beef cheeks for a holiday party last year. i hunted high and low all around chicago but couldn't find them anywhere. half of the butchers didn't even seem to know what i was talking about, but i still really really want to try them. has anyone here ever tried (or heard of) eating beef cheeks?

great job! your old appliances look like they got a facelift, too, just by being next to the freshly painted cabinets. and i disagree with those who think it's cold--i think it looks like an inviting place to cook up a meal or hang out to watch the chef.

i have a question along the same lines as aysha's. my apartment has great hardwood floors everywhere except the kitchen, where they are in terrible shape (gaps between planks, warping, different wood species). i don't think i'm ready to go with stick-on vinyl tiles everywhere, but i was wondering whether anyone knows of any attractive interlocking padded floor mats that function in the same way children's play mats that are like puzzle pieces do, but aren't so childish? i need something that is anti-skid and also non-pourous and easy to clean, but also configurable to my odd kitchen layout. ideas?

it appears in the picture that most of the furniture and rugs have a similar saturation of color. i would suggest some white or light-colored accents on the dining table and on the blue wall to provide some contrast.

um, i just readdicted myself to tetris about a week ago. glad to see i'm not the only one thinking about it.

my mom had one of these in a funky cabin she rented for a while in the mountains of north carolina. it was located in a little closet on the lofted one-room second floor bedroom. why the builder didn't put a full sink upstairs, i don't know, but the set up made it possible to get up in the middle of the night to use it AND wash your hands after without having to trek all the way down steep stairs in the dark. it creeped me out at first, too, but then i got over it in the name of convenience.

that's right about the cobra lounge -- i was pleasantly surprised by how nice, spacious, and designed the bathroom there is. the rest of the bar though is just totally weird and seems like it's having an identity crisis.

fantastic! i love that she kept all the original cabinets and even the scalloped valance. such a transformation in the feeling of the room, though. any idea how much she spent on this?

the shelf floating over the work table is a great idea. this might be the solution to my desk quandary.

i just noticed a new specialty butcher shop near me in chicago. i find it hard to find good quality meat, especially in my non-trendy neighborhood, but now i'm excited to check this place out, find some great cuts, and go from there!

i think this is great!!! very creative idea --- love the texture and everything. forget all the naysayers --- to me it looks like very cool zen tile that sells for hundreds of dollars. and i think it looks especially good next to your huge windows.
