I had a kitchen almost exactly like this. And I understand the desire to cover it over when people are there and you don't want it to look like a service stand. But if you keep things really functional I think you will find you won't have as many problems. I agree with the comments about painting the cabinets white. I would also paint the walls a matching color of white...so everything blends as much as possible. I would take all the tchotchkes down off your fridge. It tends to make things look cluttered. And if you don't have a place to put the things on your counter and top of your fridge consider a basket that will hide things a bit better. I would consider the things on your counter carefully..choose white to blend and only a two to three items at a time. Because you want this to fade, I wouldn't look for "pops of color." I would stick to whites and stainless steel. I would also consider removing all of your decorative things above the cabinets. Unless they are used often, I would replace them with raffia or metal baskets across to store extra items and give a more uniform look. How Do I Hide the Kitchen in My Studio Apartment? That is a Brno Chair, originally designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich (who were a couple) during the Bauhaus period. (around the mid 1920-30s) The other famous chair of this time period is the Barcelona Chair. More Info on Craigslist Cantilever Chairs? Good Questions |

There are base paints and even glazes that have reflective chips in them. Consider either repainting in the same color or glazing the walls to reflect and bounce more of the light around. No natural? daughter's iPhone story....she had broken the screen and went to an Apple repair guy...he replaced the screen. A few short months later the whole thing went wonky two days before she leaves for basic training in the Air Force. Verizon says to her...Sorry...you voided the warranty by having the screen replaced. She is like..."Waddya mean? It was an Apply guy?" They said, "Yes...but it wasn't a Verizon guy...so now you can send it to Apple...and it will take 3 months." She was so upset she dropped her contract with Verizon and went to US Cellular and got a LG Excite phone instead. Tales of Broken iPhones |

This is one area I have experience. I have done this. This is what I learned; 1) Yes, you can ask. And more likely than not, if your landlord plans on re-renting after you leave and you leave the appliances behind, they will agree. 2) Pick out what you want. So you pick out the Amana Armoire fridge and it runs around $1,150.00....your landlord is going to have a fridge for $575.00 that he could have never gotten for that price. he comes out ahead. So make sure you pick out EXACTLY what you want. 3) Show him higher end rentals with better appliances and what they rent for....he can probably ask another $25-$50 a month if his place has one or two higher end appliances. DO NOT PAINT!!! PICKLE!!! I love the weathered old gray coloring of barn wood and that weathering will be a color that will be tolerable for a long time to come. The unfortunate honey maple is very dated. However, if you pickle (and not the fake pickling of the 80s that turned everything an unfortunate icky off white...but the real pickling: See here http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/990132/list/Great-Material--Gray-Wood-for-Winter) it will have a great weathered look which will keep that "cabin" in Vermont look...and lose the dated look. *nods* Help My Mom Decide: The Great Wood Paneling Debate |

Ok...not reading through everything, but in just eyeballing it. You have FAR too many thing in this room. I would take out everything...and I mean everything from this room and move pieces back in with a conscious thought. Put the Couch in another room...doesn't belong here. The first two I would consider moving back in are the two deep chairs. Yes, they work, but they are your foundation pieces. Not the couch. It is far too big for this room. Face them at a slight angle toward the fireplace, with a rug, and a small table between. To the left of the fireplace as you face it, one smaller chair, with one smaller table. In the corners under each window by the rad, matching chairs again, no tables. This gives you a room to move around and socialize in, to sit comfortably in, and to move the furniture in and around in to for other conversation groups as needed with groups of people. However, for moving through the room and living in it, it keeps it feeling light and somewhat weightless. The two chairs you have from C&B are substantial enough to weigh the room down and give it a cozy feeling if you situate them close enough to the fireplace and with a central table. You want it to feel like you are inviting two people in to sit and have a cup of tea...not wait for the doctor. Living Room Layout Challenge: What Would You Do? |

I typically move garbage cans close to where I will be living and eat off things that can be thrown away. It is more sanitary for those in my home as I do not want to pass on my germs to them. So my small table will have kleenex, plastic forks, solo cups and paper plates. I also keep it on a small tray with any meds I am taking. That way I have easy transportation from couch to bed and back again. My kids call it the "sick tray" because it only comes out when someone is sick. Homekeeping When You're Home Sick |

I have beige carpet and gray walls. I have managed to pull it together by bringing in white, creams, grays, blacks, a pale gray blue and lavendars. The soft tones all play off each other and are very soothing. I have kept all patterns very subtle and the artwork is usually fairly monochromatic but framed in black so it has a cohesive look in the room. Will Grey Paint Color Work with Tan Sofa? The area is so small...I would lay a laminate floor over the tile...it will "man up" the floor and then a nice coat of a coffee bean color to the vanity and change out the hardware...the bathroom tiles will fit right in with that mid-century take. Do silver/chrome hardware and silver accents to go with the silver flecked tile. Plan on the laminate being a gimme. Later on when time and money permit take out the floor and replace for real. It depends on the friend....my best friend is a doctor, and I would most certainly answer the phone for her as it could be an emergency in which time is of the essence. I would also answer the phone for her husband who is my husband's best friend. And I know they would and have done the same for me. Other friends that I am not as close with and do not know as well, I would holler and ask if they want me to grab it, or just let them know it was ringing. Some friends are as close as family and there are some familiarities that you both feel comfortable with....it depends on the friendship and what is understood between the two of you. My husband and I have a rule....Nobody in the bed you cannot have sex with. That means no pets...no kids. It is our retreat. Since I already allow the kids and dog into my bedroom for a variety of reasons at different points of the day, I have made the bed the one thing that is ours and ours alone. Everyone has their own bed decked out with clean sheets, blankets and pillows...and the dog has three of his own. Reader Roundup: Pets in Your Bed? |
