Unless you buy a bar of gold, precious metals are not an investment. Jewelry loses a lot of value... So, invest in a decent piece of furniture that you like and would like to keep for many years. It's like a Louis Vuitton handbag. 600€ when you buy it. But 10 years later it still looks better than the 10 bags you would have bought at 60€ each! Magazines & books. Watching TV all day gets boring. And yes, please visit if the person stays longer than just a few days. I was hospitalized (& bedridden) for 10 days. Both my sisters were to busy to come and visit me (they lived only 20 and 40 min drive away). My dad couldn't be bothered. My mother stayed with my kids and took them for a visit every day. Thankfully my friends made an effort to visit me, as well as some of my neighbours. Long hospital stays are boring. Home Away From Home: Making a Hospital Stay More Comfortable |

Scandinavian is a great look. But African would do too. African designs in black & white, for your curtains, carpets, furniture, ... And a few bright color touches here & there if you want to spice it up. Eg cushions, a painting, a picture, one piece of furniture in a bright color, flowers. But not too much of it! I sold my house in Brussels to move to the country side. I was planning to rent a house to live in with my teenagers, and invest in an apartment in Brussels city for later (I could buy without a mortgage). Under the pressure of my mother, I bought another house, with another mortgage, and more renovations. The house ended up being a bad investment because of hidden problems. I have been regretting every day for the past 2 years that I bought this house. The worries are seriously affecting my health. I wish I had a hassle free rental. A?d that's what it will be when I manage to sell this place. I'm Renting...And Okay with That |

Can't live without a dishwasher. I love cooking. I hate doing dishes. 20 years ago, when I started living with my ex, he had no dishwasher but a maid who came every second day. So the dishes waited until she came. Unless my ex wanted to do them. Then when I divorced with two young kids, after years of having 2 dishwashers, I was a few months without in a temporary rental. I bought cardboard plates and plastic cups... So I only had to wash the cutlery, pots & pans. Yep, that bad. Of course I have a dishwasher again. My Life Without a Dishwasher Renters Solutions |

If I had a choice between frozen milk or UHT milk, I 'd go for UHT... It is standard in most European countries. You can just put it in storage in the cellar, garage or wherever, and buy even for months ahead. I can't imagine it tastes worse than frozen milk. Got (Too Much) Milk? Freeze It for Later! |

People who have food allergies should always tell this to the hostess, in advance! No one wants to kill their guest. But having someone sitting at my table, telling me they can't eat shrimp, is not fun! Is it too much to mention that when you accept the reservation? Must I really mother my guests and enquire about their food allergies/intolerances/dislikes? You have a problem, you mention it. I am happy to cater to anyone's needs. People who can't stand normal living noises should not live in an apartment. I don't see how a small child can make too much noise by normal playing, laughing, running around. No one should tiptoe in their apartment! A baby is allowed to cry! Some people really have no tolerance. If you want to control all the noises, you should live in a house... I'm Belgian. We only have unpasteurized eggs here. And we have lots of recipes with raw eggs. Adding a raw egg yolk to mashed potatoes or rice pudding is typical and is even given to small children. My mother always made mayonnaise. We have never had food poisoning. Vinegar is a natural preservative. Use very fresh eggs. Keep the mayo refrigerated, only take out what you need. It should keep for about a week or 2 at least. Color change or change of smell indicate the mayo is off. Anyway, I prefer a quality commercial mayo (no preservatives, no additives, just the basic ingredients). But if I am out, I know how to make it :) Lunch Recipe: Tuna Melts with Olive Oil Mayonnaise & Parmesan Recipes from The Kitchn |

I don't like being invited to a restaurant, where to start with I have to pay the average of what everyone else ordered (so I can even opt for a cheap dish), and then still am expected to pay for a present. I always throw parties at my house (sometimes for up to 35 people). I have a great wine cellar. I love cooking. And I usually ask people to bring something for the buffet (a salad or dessert). Some bring a birthday present, some don't (I usually don't announce it is my birthday, but most friends know by now). It doesn't matter. I am just happy to see my friends in my house and enjoy good food & wine with them. Without extravagant expense. Grown Up Birthdays: What Does a Party Mean to You? |

I'm not for fur, but having lived in Canada, I understand how cold it can get. And fur makes a difference. A secondhand fur coat should be acceptable. I have a fox fur hat that I bought whilst living in Canada 25 years ago (it was still quite acceptable then to wear fur). It still looks new. And if it is minus 10 or colder and need to go on a long walk, I would not hesitate to wear it. Now wearing a fur coat in Monte Carlo is absolutely ridiculous, and is definitely cruelty against animals. There is no excuse to wear fur when the climate does not justify it. Anything Goes? I love Philippe Starck's Victoria Ghost chairs. In Belgium you can buy them discount. These are chairs that were used for rentals, and will have light scratches from use. Knowing that if you pay the full price and use them, within a year you'll have scratched chairs too, this is a very good deal. Anyway, I think these chairs contrast with rustic furniture, antique furniture, ... and make any style of table look good in a modern home. Chair Ideas for Custom Rustic Dining Table? I used to live in this really great street in a multicultural neighbourhood of Brussels, Belgium. My next door neighbour, fro Moroccan descent, once stopped me while I was driving away to the garage with a flat tyre, and changed it to the spare one in the middle of the street. Another neighbour/friend took my kids for a sleepover when I had to go to ER one evening late. Another neighbour (also a Moroccan family) helped move some furniture around when I came back from hospital so I could sleep downstairs. And so one. We had a street party twice a year (hosted in someone's house and everyone would bring drinks and something for the buffet). I remember conversations when some of us where drinking wine and a muslim woman talking about why she was wearing a veil AND sending her kids to Catholic school (they are known for excellent education in Belgium). And so on. I live in the (purely Belgian Flemish) countryside now, and people don't care too much here... Multicultural society really has it's added value I would say. My Best Neighbor Ever |

My 17 year old son is going to boarding school, he'll have his own room with bed, wardrobe, desk & sink, communal showers & toilets. They have a lounge area with a kitchen. Thanks for the great tips here, like showering with flip flops. I never had that problem in my student years, but I guess times have changed. 10 Must-Have Dorm Room Essentials Back to School 2012 |

I find it sad that people need a ring on their finger to be reminded of their commitment. If you love each other, and you want to share your life, you should be able to go through the ups and downs without a legally binding document. What scares me about marriage (I am divorced) is that some people just see this as a way of controlling the other person. You are not allowed to work, to have certain friends, to do certain things, to have financial independency. And when you finally realise that you want to be your own person and want out of this a legal battle starts, that is physically and psychologically affecting you. 12 years later this man still tries to control my life, telling me I am not allowed to move with the kids (I am), trying to get access in my house legally (he can't) telling me I am spending the child support on my own holiday whilst the kids are with him (I have my own income) and so on. Marriage is too often a power game. And when you are not married, you have the freedom to go. Immediately. This kind of powergames, abuse, happen more often than one thinks. I truly truly believe if real love is involved, and you both have good moral values, you do not need a legally binding document. Modern Matrimony: Who Benefits the Most? |

Coming from chocolate spread (Nutella & other) country Belgium, we never put this in the fridge. How would you spread it on bread? Jam also does not have to go in the fridge, unless it is low sugar. And if it grows mold, just scoop it off. Same with cheeses: if they grow mold: just cut it off. You can eat cheese weeks after the sell by date without any worries! (not talking about processed cheese which I know nothing about, I'm talking about real cheese). Cheese like Camembert, Brie, Roquefort should ideally be kept in a cool place like a cellar, that has no odors (like fuel) which could contaminate the cheese. If I know the cheese will be eaten within a week, I will store it in the cellar. And yes, this goes for RAW milk cheeses! We never get sick. It is safe. The flavour is so much better. If I have lots of left over pieces of cheese or hardened pieces of cheese, I use it to make a quiche. And any other leftovers (meat, veggies) can go in that too :) Guaranteed to Save You Money & Time: Tips for Organizing Your Fridge |

I use a duvet cover with a topsheet. It's twice as easy: you don't have to launder that big duvet cover every week, just the top sheet and mattrass sheet. And making the bed is still a breeze. (I'm Belgian by the way) Small Changes, Serious Impact |

I sold my semi-professional 5 stove gas cooker with double electrical oven, because I have no gas at my new house. And I really miss this cooker. It all depends on where your passion lies. And cooking is one of my biggest ones. I still dream of a Kitchen Aid robot, which I know I will use a lot (for baking, etc). But there are certainly kitchen gadgets that are a total waste. I think my biggest problem lies in the rest of the house. The pressure of having nice things to show off. I spent so much money on nice china, silver dishes, glasses, silver cutlery,... Even though I do a lot of entertaining, my friends really don't care if I have mismatched plates and dishes. They just love the food that is on it! They also do not care about my collection of antique furniture. And for me, to move it around (7 times in the past 10 years) is just a hassle! I donate or sell books, because a big library is not a necessity, more of a show off. I sold most of my gold jewelry - the price is high!- to start traveling again. In the end, you have to think about where your passion lies, and put your money in there. Not to impress other people. Just for yourself, and your loved ones. Fighting the Feeling of "Should" |
