This is cute, but I guess if I'm busting out the spray paint for the tape I'd probably just spray paint the frame.

$5 DIY: Dress Up Your Frames with Tape A Thoughtful Place

I lived in a 250 square foot studio in my 20's and LOVED it. I was able to decorate it just right and everything had its place, plus the layout was ideal. I still regret not having submitted it to Small Cool that first year the contest started. I love living with my fella in a slightly larger space, but I'm always surprised by how much I miss that place in hindsight--I never would have thought so at the time when I so desperately craved a larger place!

I think a lot of this trend can be attributed to the fact that we used to have a TV, a VCR, video tapes, a DVD player, DVD's, CD players, CD's, speakers, etc...If I wasn't so attached to my DVR I'd really just have a TV with an HDMI cable for streaming from my laptop. Three out of the six compartments on our relatively small entertainment console are completely empty now. Forget about an entire wall (which I did grow up having)!

I have not posted a comment on AT in years but Leah, your home is fantastic in a stylish and lived-in way. I've been an NYC dweller for almost 15 years, but as a native of Silver Spring...way to bring some style to my hometown!!

I feel like I remember proper Tupperware being expensive, unless that's something my mom told me so I'd stop leaving her Tupperware stash at school...

This looks great, if I had more than one cupboard (mine's about the size of the one pictured), I'd definitely follow suit. My shelves don't move, either. Boooo!

Don't forget you can use them for cleaning as well. Rub some lemon halves on your cutting board or countertops. You can add some salt or sugar to create an abrasive scrub too. And the house will smell divine and less chemical-ly

Ditto on the gravy and risotto, not to mention it's a great veggie substitute for chicken stock in almost any application. It's great for pasta sauce, instead of adding just pasta water, add a few tablespoons of the mushroom stock for added flavor.

Bread it and fry it like goat cheese for a salad, or a snack! Or you can use it like mozzarella and make tofu "mozzarella sticks". Here's my recipe (where it's cornmeal crusted):

My wine fiend friends have many pairing books, and evidently a bottle of bubbly goes very well with Asian food, especially the spicy stuff (according to several books). We've tested it out, and I must say, it's a surprisingly lovely combination!

I adapted a great recipe for these from a recent article in the NY Times Magazine. The author also said a 1/2 inch slice, but I found a 3/4 to 1 inch chiffinade better, otherwise you get some pieces so tiny they crumble in your hand. Here's my recipe:

My grandmother was the only one in my house with no fear of killing the gophers and moles in our yard when I was a kid. I was too little to see exactly, but she did something involving broken glass in their holes and they never came back. Yaya was serious about rodent control--she could also catch mice in the house with a dishcloth.

Pretty, but very symmetrical. There's two of almost everything!

I think you just need to put it in the right space--that wall it's on now it far too big and it ends up looking dumpy (and yes, dorm-like). Try incorporating it into a setting like Colleen did in her example: behind a bar, behind a landing strip with some lamps that frame it, etc... If you put it somewhere it can shine, those colors and pattern can really make a statement.

My only closet is in the living room, so I used my bedroom alcove to make a makeshift closet. It was juuuust deep enough for hangers, and I could build it all the way up to the ceiling (and I have high ones), to store off-season clothes up high and what I'm wearing now at eye level.

kmarie,

You could always sweeten the rub with brown sugar, or maybe try a glaze with some thick sweet soy like kecap manis, or make your own balsamic vinegar glaze.

Or maybe change up the rub a bit with some fall spices, a little nutmeg, and clove with the brown sugar, or even chinese five spice? Here's a link to some greens I made with those spices--they tasted great and really made the house smell of fall!

I just used one at Little Branch last week, they were great. Although the metal against your teeth is an odd feeling...

My family lives in Spain where much of the worlds saffron is harvested (in North Africa as well) so I have them bring me some when they come to visit since it's significantly cheaper there. Something important to remember (according to mom) is that it should be kept in an airtight container, otherwise it will dry further and lose its aroma and flavor, which would be a shame considering how pricey it is. Also, like most dried herbs/spices, keep it away from the heat, so no resting the jar on the edge of the stove :)

Fried green tomato BLT!!! I make this deconstructed one, but a traditional one with nice crusty bread would do just fine.
