i'm with you on the beans and the rice. my kid loooooves pasta as well and will usually eat anything with it - and she loves putting the parmesan cheese on herself. other things that we love: tofu hotdogs, frozen peas, precooked chicken sausage (usually kept in the freezer), cheese (lots of cheese!), bananas, yogurt and those squeezey pouches by plum organics (i order them online).

i like the idea of mise en place, and sometimes i do it, but i have to agree with other commenters that this is wasteful.

i agree that shredded cheese ain't the best, but for busy parents who work full time and try to make decent home-cooked food for themselves and their kids, this saves them a helluva lot of time. i think that right now our biggest worry is the use of pesticides on our fruits and veggies. organic is sooooo expensive! we buy organic when we can, and we always get organic milk because i don't want my daughter getting her period or growing her boobies in elementary school, but it sure is expensive! we generally pick our safe-food battles according to our income. it sucks, but its true - for a lot of people.

we have a nice oriental (wool) rug in our kitchen, and not only does it stay clean somehow, but it brightens up and warms up our dark and unheated kitchen. we love it! (and once it gets warm we will take it out and hose it down to give it a good cleaning)

i would say dont bother with your landlord. you can always call the cops on your loud neighbors. whenever i had issues with other tenants i did just that. they are probably violating an ordinance - check your local laws. if i had a problem with the landlord i just called the housing inspectors for the city. that gets the landlord really moving :) good luck with the new house! :)

good post! i would love to see the same type of round up, but for online services that will email, for instance, holiday cards instead of invites. as working parents we don't have time to print and send cards. plus, we don't have everyone's home address, so email is so much more efficient.
