My parents planted a tree for me when I was a toddler. The sapling came from my grandparents yard and it turned out not to be a red oak, but instead a huckleberry. This happy accident means that I have a unique tree that exists nowhere else in their yard (an important aspect to keep in mind when selecting a tree for this purpose). The small sturdy tree makes for great climbing for neighborhood kids, the abundant berries attract tons of greedy little birds, and shapely leaves are lovely in the fall. I love all these things about this tree, and remember my grandparents whenever I visit my parents home and the tree named after me.

I have lived in rentals with both light hardwood floors and dark hardwood floors. Everything people are saying about the light floors hiding dust bunnies etc is TOTALLY true. As a marginally effective housekeeper I will never ever install dark floors in my home. You can always

While I agree that this lucky girl seems to have lots of spendy original art I LOVE the dark hallway!! I have been thinking of doing the same thing and this has given me the courage to do it TODAY! After all, if Frank Lloyd Wright could do it...

Thanks AT. :)

Really A.T.?? This is so crazy aspirational, like having the top of the line $4000 Numi Kohler bidet toilet with speakers, LED lighting, automatic custom adjustments etc, and calling it the "best" toilet ever. Really?

SO happy you posted this story. No joke I'm living in a parallel universe version of this condo while simultaneously renovating it.

I actually have a great piece of information, having struggled w/ the bathroom vanity issue too and reached the same four conclusions. I ended up getting a quote from a cabinetry maker from Angie's List. For about half the cost of the Restoration Hardware dream vanity I'm getting a new custom modern (woohoo) vanity and refacing done on a tall bathroom cabinet. The new vanity will have organizational tools like spendy cabinets, and perfectly fit my space. As a bonus prize I was able to adjust the size slightly and use a pre-fab quartz vanity top complete with an undermount sink from Lowe's, saving me about $300 off a custom quartz top.

Just a thought...

I have used Benjamin Moore's Stone Harbor on kitchen cabinets and in my dining room. I originally picked it to work with my living room's warm brown sofa, and it totally worked. My space is very airy and bright, and the Stone Harbor is lovely and soft. With my dining room light on in the evening the color goes a little bit lavender, but I actually like that as well. I'm so in love with the color I'm going to paint a bedroom in the color too.

Regarding the starch/paste comment, its from Daniel the genius behind Manhattan Nest (instructions here) http://manhattan-nest.com/2010/06/01/the-doors/

However, as your doors are already frosted this seems a little pointless. If you do decide to make something upholstered (which is totally achievable for a novice btw) I'd suggest you 1) buy an electric staple gun and 2) consider metal mending plates as supports behind the panels. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&rlz=1C1ECSA_enUS465US465&q=metal+mending+plates&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&ion=1&biw=1366&bih=603&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=8260977161370129680&sa=X&ei=-QMIT5azBomriQLO9dTECQ&ved=0CFcQ8wIwAwThey are cheap, available at any hardware store, and easily applied to the hidden back of your project with a drill.
