I have seen both sides of this. When I was 6, my parents got me a desk. An antique desk. And, yes, it was a lovely desk, but no six year old wants to use a giant antique desk. Some of the drawers were so sticky and heavy, it took most of my weight to open them. Something cheap, made of particle board, from IKEA would have been a much better choice for the accidental crayon scribble. But at the same time, my sister tried to "have a say" in her room and her "say" changed like every six months. About the same time a new Disney movie would come out. So, my parents kept her room fairly neutral and just placated her with a new Disney comforter.

Parents should just keep things basic and functional and realize no matter how they try to "decorate" their kids hobbies and interests will no doubt set the tone. And given how frequently those change, unless you are made of money, DON'T decorate kids rooms. You or them. It's not worth it.

Try not to register for anything that can't stand alone. Some friends of mine were just starting off and registered for a bunch of china. While none of their friends could afford to get them full settings, so they received bowls and plates and such, but they never had anywhere near the china they would need to entertain. If the china is a well known pattern that's not going anywhere, you could always save up and slowly finish off the collection, but you don't want to end up with a collection you can't complete. Don't assume you'll get everything and think about the ramifications if you don't.

I just bought a house with the EXACT same cabinets and I have one piece of advice, do not touch the cabinets first. Yes, they are horrible and dated, but in my case, the horribleness was magnified by all the other outdated stuff in my kitchen. Once we redid the backsplash, the cabinets actually weren't so bad. They went from "outdated" to "vintage" and "kitschy". Start with the backsplash and then reevaluated the cabinets.

I've been hunting for advice on hanging curtains since we just bought our first home and I refuse to get behind hanging the curtains basically on the ceiling. In the picture above, the window on the left just looks better with the curtains right above the window. The one on the right just makes the windows look smaller, like the windows shrunk once the curtains were hung.
