I know that the original post is a few years old but i came across this thread and I have big doubts on the truth of your supplier. I grew up in Italy, in the mountains where temperatures are below zero regularly every year for months on end, and terracotta (not porcelain) has been used both inside and outside the house with out any issues. Put it this way, just think or the billion of terracotta barrel roof tiles that are on European houses, that get rained on and then sit in a European winter, and they don't crack... We have imported terracotta for a wide variety of projects throughout the USA and have never had an issue of this kind.
