I have a tendency to go overboard with thrift store and clothing purchases so I've adopted a one-in one-out policy. For each item I buy (like a tea cup or dress) I get rid of one that I already own.

I think this is a great idea! So much, in fact, that I made one of my own. Although, personally, I like to look at them as goals that can be started in the new year and worked on over time; not resolutions that have to be "finished" in a certain time frame.
