I hang most of my clothes up to dry anyways because they last longer and most of what I wear is not supposed to be dried in the machine. I lived with only a washer in Europe and the only problem was the sheets. I would hang them over several chairs to dry but they would always be stiff. I could never get towels and sheets to feel soft. Is there a secret? 5 Tips for Living Without a Washer/Dryer |

I am of the age where everyone I know is having babies and I have never heard of this trend. If it is a close friend or family member, I will hear through email or phone or the good old grape vine. If it is someone I haven't seen in 10 years, I will hear either when I see a picture of them looking like they swallowed a watermelon or an actual birth announcement. Wow it seems like you are pretty serious about wine. Wouldn't it be a good investment to get one of those wine cellars that keeps your bottles at an ideal temperature? Too bad apartments in San Francisco don't come with wine caves like they do in Paris ;) Beth's Romantic & Retro Residence House Tour |

I shared a bedroom with my little brother until I was 9. My dad and grandpa built me a loft as a surprise once my brother started walking. There was room for my single mattress and space to keep my dollhouse and precious toys that my brother would have broken. That loft went a long way in preventing sibling fights. Plus, even my friends who had their own rooms were envious because it is really cool to have a kid-sized space way up high! Kids don't need a lot of space and only just a little privacy. Of course, for teens it is a different story...really glad we moved to a 3 bedroom and I could have a tiny room all to myself for those tween and teen years. Man, I could have used this in college when my roommate would optimistically set the alarm for 4am to study, then hit snooze every 10 minutes until 9am....I was the only one who ever woke up with that alarm. Chronic Snoozer? App Forces You to Walk to Wake Up |

I estimated the square footage of how much space my things would take up in a storage locker. Since I own a lot of books, UPS was out. The moving company had a flat rate for square footage so long as you came in under a certain weight (can't remember the number). In any case, even with about 20-30 boxes of books, my shipment came in under that weight estimate. I did have a bad experience with a cheap moving company who contracted out to some really shady movers and I had to cancel after they failed to show twice. It turned out to be worth it to hire a local company with solid reputation (ask around your community) and a good Better Business rating, even though the cost was several hundred more than the cheap options. In my experience, movers are always late and you are lucky if everything you send arrives in one piece. You just have to factor that into the timing and planning. Moving: What Do You Do When Everything Goes Wrong? |

Good choice - my grandmother painted a lovely little 19th century mahogany sewing cabinet sometime in the 1970s or 80s because it wasn't "modern" enough, Such a shame because she completely ruined a valuable unique heirloom. I guess to her, the 19th century was just her grandparents' time and not really worth preserving. I have a feeling our kids will think the same about any mid century pieces we paint now.
