I would get it professionally refinished & re-stained. It really depends on your decor & how eclectic you are. I have a mid century modern home so I am not a lover of traditional. I would stain it a Wenger or Black. It would change the whole look. If you're attached to it because of family, do whatever you can to make your own taste.
