Angela here -- Thanks everyone for the suggestions! To clarify a few things: the fireplace insert (the white box with stones) is a gas-burning fireplace insert, and functions. We don't love it either, but are stuck with it for now. We just turned the mirror vertically and agree it looks better, but might still be too big -- if we hang it, it would only be a couple of inches from the ceiling. And as for our "style" ... heck, how does one answer that? Modern sensibility, tailored to a 1930s-era tudor, with some ethno-kitsch thrown in, and a lot of toys. Thanks again -- keep those suggestions coming (rest assured we'll be clothing the boy, post haste)!

BUYER BEWARE UNICA HOME!

I wish I had read these reviews before ordering six Rosenthal Tac02 glasses as a wedding gift for a friend. Getting the glasses from Unica Home has been an experience in epically bad customer service - not rude, not criminal, just completely disorganized. Suffice it to say that I started this process in May and it's now October and I still don't have what I ordered. I'm pretty certain that if I didn't follow up with them, they never would have delivered anything to me.

I have no idea how they stay in business.

I built one of these myself in a shared apartment I had in 1995. I didn't know I started a trend :)

We have the same issue in our house. We thought of a bunch of ideas but ultimately went with Flor carpet tiles. One alternative might be to put a very heavy coat of urethane on the wood - the type of coating that goes on basketball courts. I've never seen it done in a kitchen, but it could work. You could get water all over it and nothing would happen. The other approach is more Zen: just consider any blemishes to be part of the character of the kitchen. Let it get worn and have it refinished before you sell your place.

We were dying to get the Erin Adams from Ann Sacks for our kitchen backspash, but we found the stratospheric pricing to be rather over the top. So we went with a mother of pearl tile from Porcelanosa at a fifth of the price. Not as nice, but we didn't feel silly buying it.

OMG. I'm in a "category". I have to change something. Ditch The Wire? No. San Pellegrino? No. My Apples? No. My Nelson lamps? No. My junior year abroad? Impossible. I don't hate my parents, so nyah.

I have an Ideal Auto-Lock tape measure. It glides very smoothly and is locked by default so you pull the tape out and it stays out until you press the button. Good quality and easy to use for $17.

My most valuable tool in the house is a cordless drill/screwdriver - a decent quality one.

And if you do get one out, it ruins the look. Ridiculous.

Looks like a DIY possiblity. Just put a piece of wood backing on it and screw it back on. All you need to do is make sure the screw has something solid to go into and you're good.

I saw the Knickerbocker at Wonk in Williamsburg today. After seeing the Modulicious by Blu Dot also in person, I've decided to go with the Blu Dot product. It seems that the build quality is a bit better - not by an order of magnitude - but enough for it to be noticeable. IMHO of course.

Hi.

We have an 18' x 14' kitchen/dining area in a single room that we're totally remodeling. Our kitchen will have a 6x4 island that will have the sink, d/w, and cabinets. The island will also function to visually delimit the "kitchen" and "dining" areas of the room.

Question: do we put pendants over the island or do recessed lighting? Is this just a matter of taste?

Thanks.
Aaron

Why can't they keep it real?

I'm starting to grow weary of design magazines, publications, etc. that stage interiors for photoshoots. The first thing I think of when I see spotless, clutter-free space is: who lives there, robots? Fascists? Fascist robots? I don't live like that, and I literally know only one person who does (and I know, like, a ton of people!). So my question for the AT folks: where can I find design guidance for real people like myself: people with crap lying around. I want my crap lying around to look good where it is. So I need some ideas here...

Thanks guys.
