Yummm. I just made a delish fig tart last weekend. The recipe is from Bon Appetit, a few years ago:

And I love to make a salad with figs, goat cheese, arugula, prosciutto, and a little nice balsamic vinegar.

I like the idea, but I guess I think maybe you should have some sort of upholstery-like blanket that you will cover the whole set of bedding with, and then put the pillows on top of that. Otherwise I feel like it will be slightly "ew-we're-sitting-on-their-bed" feeling. I always feel a little shamefaced when guests sit on our bed - not sure why, since I'm not normally squeamish about anything. But unless you're completely fastidious about your linens, I think a heavy blanket that doesn't *look* like a blanket is in order. That would help with any wierd feelings people have.

Don't forget that - I think - the rules regarding carrying on liquids are still in place, meaning you have to pack your olive oil and vinegar and wine in your checked baggage, which makes me a bit nervous...

Maybe I'm wrong?

Our just-purchased apartment has an eat-in kitchen and one large living room that we'll put a long dining table in for bigger crowds. I like the arrangement fine, and we'll use the table the rest of the time for projects and such, but it's not ideal.

I think my "dream house" would have one large open space with a big kitchen/dining table, with room for anyone who happens in and for big holiday meals, as well as just family dinners (and maybe some sort of breakfast bar for, well, breakfast). But I'm kinda anti-formal dining room, really any room that only gets used a few times a year and "for company." I'd rather have the big table as part of the kitchen, which in my dream life would not be messy, even after cooking :P

I either microwave it on the defrost setting in 5 second bursts, turning it occasionally, or I set it on a plate on the oven while it reheats and turn it every few minutes.

We brits refer to these as "deck chairs." And I noticed when I was in Bed Bath and Beyond the other day that they are selling them, tho sadly, sans stripes. And more sadly, I don't see them on their website.

Here are some others, tho - not cheap:

But what's the deal with the Manstad? From the comments on that post, it sounded like it wasn't actually in stores :(

I had the *best* basil cocktail just last week at T-Rex BBQ in Berkeley. The details are a bit hazy, but it had thyme-infused vodka, basil, and lime, I think? It was sooooo good.

the best way to water an orchid is to mist it daily with a spray bottle - which is why the humid enviro of the shower is good. but i'd still mist it. i'd also do as the poster above suggested, and, once every few weeks, run it under the tap but let *all* the water drain out. the best way to kill an orchid is to let it sit in water - the roots will just rot - so you never want to water it the way you would a traditional plant. in "the wild," orchids' roots are exposed on the trees they grow on, and they gather moisture that way from the humid air of the rainforest - which is why misting and the occasional well-drained drench is your best bet.

I luurrrve my Wusthoff 8" chef's knife. The main thing I look for is a good reputation, followed by how it feels in my hand. I like a heavy knife, but that's just me. Get thee to the knife store and try a few out! Wusthoff is a good brand, so is Henkels (sp?), not sure what else.

I make something much like this, but I like to throw a can of white beans in, as well. It beefs it up like crazy - but definitely makes it more of a winter dish.

Me, I'm makin that grain-and-meyer-lemon salad you posted the other day. Lunch all next week!
