Angie's list charges you to leave a review, (15$ when I logged on to leave a good review for our roofer) so the only people leaving reviews are probably the people getting paid to do it.
I don't trust them at all anymore.

I am a maker. Not of furniture or probably anything else you'd ever feature on this blog, but a maker nonetheless. I can't tell you how many times I have heard that someone could buy "the same" item as something I'm selling at Walmart for half the price.

Sustainability has so many facets and affording those who make the items in question a wage which doesn't leave them starving is one of those facets. Add in the cost of sustainable materials and this is often why things "green" cost so much more.
From the end-user standpoint, that Eames armchair aside, I'm so tired of household items that can't be repaired once they've broken. I had quite a fight with a toaster before finally coming to the realization that I could not get the parts to fix it because no one made them.
That's the real crime: Living in a world where things are designed to break, be trashed and replaced. That's the thing that should make that woman sick to her stomach.

After dealing with the death of a hoarder family member, I took care to go thru my things and pare them down pretty drastically. Unfortunately, my husband has our entire spare bedroom, the hall closet and a 2 car garage so full of crap that there is literally no storage space for normal household things like the vacuum cleaner. He refuses to get rid of anything, ever, even tho he can't get to half of the useful things because there's so much junk in front of them.
None of these suggestions work on someone with a possessions problem, one has to be ready to pare down and trying to make someone do it before they're ready is a recipe for disaster. or divorce.

While not every situation requires primer, it exists for a reason and like others have said it is different from paint. Maybe it won't matter in the year or two you live in your apartment, but you are creating a problem that someone down the road is going to curse you for.

It's your choice to not feed them, but if you are really bothered by them I'd suggest (as did another reader) encouraging a trap-spay-release program. Letting homeless cats breed unrestrained is incredibly cruel, regardless of whether they're being fed by the neighbors, and if you aren't part of the solution, yes you ARE part of the problem.

Real shellac (NOT lacquer) is a safe, non-toxic finish. The only downside is you can't just let liquids puddle on it forever, or it will cloud.

I use an old wooden ladder for all my heels, (which comprise the vast majority of my stash) store my flats under my dresser in a line and my boots line up between the ladder rungs.

I'm not entirely sure why you're hating on the parking mat. If you've ever tried to clean oil drips off of a garage floor, it's damn near impossible. Sure, it'd be nice if cars didn't leak random fluids, but it happens, especially when your car is almost 20 years old.

Another thing to consider is that your 1920s era home was not built to support the weight of modern asphalt shingles, especially not 3 layers of them. Frankly I'm surprised your attic didn't collapse (like ours almost did). I hope someone added some bracing up there.
But back to the vents...not all houses can have them, it really depends on how the house was built. The onion shaped fans work just as well, and other climates work better with gable vents.
All that said, thanks for posting about this, attic vents are a great thing and it's crazy how many houses don't have them. It's good to think about them when you have to re-roof!

I think that guy is probably an immature prankster, not someone actually trying to make a statement. If he serious, he should take his beef out on city planners who don't create spaces for bikes to legally park, not the people trying to do some good by riding them.
Similar problem here if you ride a scooter (which I do). If you take up a parking space, you're likely to get your bike knocked over. If you park by a bike rack, bikers get pissed. If you park on the sidewalk, pedestrians get ticked. I understand all of that, but where exactly are we supposed to park?

It's combed/dragged. paint your wall the lighter color, then mix your darker color about 50/50 with glaze. roll on only what you can quickly comb back off before it dries, and keep a wet edge. For your "comb", you can either use a stiff bristled brush or a squeegee with teeth cut into it. It also looks like the effect was slightly softened afterwards with a very soft feathering brush. Once you get the vertical direction done, repeat horizontally.
This isn't hard, but it IS time consuming, and I recommend practicing on something smaller first. You'll want to keep cheesecloth or rags handy to to dab your comb off with because it will get all goopy and stop making texture if you don't. =)

I have 2:
1. Sitting in who-knows-what restaurant in Amsterdam, with a wall of glass on level with the canals, all decorated crazy with orchids and golden gods and our shoes waiting outside eating the most delicious thai beef salad. We were crying with each bite because it was so spicy, but the flavor was so amazing my husband and I couldn't stop eating it. It made me learn to cook thai, altho I've never been able to recreate that exact spice combo.

2. A train station on the border of Spain and France, on the coast. A simple pair of sandwiches on baguettes and a bottle of wine. To keep a seat (for our 6 hour layover) we had to have a bill over a certain amount, so we ordered the most expensive bottle of wine on the menu, at 25USD a bottle (omg, the exchange rate used to be so awesome). I was expecting something along the lines of Gallo because I figured the prices were inflated, so imagine my surprise when we were served a 25 year old bottle of... (here is where I kick myself for not keeping the label)... that might have been the best red wine I have had before, or since. We'd been in Europe for 6 weeks at that point, so good bread, sandwiches and good wine were no strangers, but damn if that wasn't the absolute best 40USD I have ever spent in my entire life.

I second the Fannie Farmer comment. I found a vintage copy at an estate sale that was almost identical to my grandmother's. You can bet I snapped that puppy up, even though I was still living at home. I still refer to it religiously for biscuits, breads, jams and pies.

Two options for size problems:
1. Talk to a local carpenter. Often, they can extend the edges of the headboard. It's not cheap, but old beds are solid and built so much better than most new ones that it will likely be worth it in the long run.

2. If it's king size you need, buy two twins and join them together. There are LOTS of cute twin beds out there, and you can usually easily find matching pairs.

ps. candle wax also works to "antique" a paint finish and it's not as slimy as vaseline.

There are non-chlorine bleaches out there if you are really set on using it, but I rarely ever do. Between tea-tree oil and vinegar I can sanitize and get the smell out of anything.
(I saw one ad say to wash out your baby bottles with it. I mean... REALLY?!?!? ugh)

Kuri, I think that's just you. I've never experienced any sort of tolerance. Lucky!

As for repellants, I've made my own with vodka and lavender/rosemary oil, and they do work - for about 15 minutes. Beyond that I swear the little b*ggers figure out you're a human. You have to keep re-spraying.
