I agree with a lot of the previous posts. A dimmer switch could really solve the lighting problem.

You could also put picture lights above your artwork to add more indirect lighting (Ikea sells them). As for the frames, you don't have to repaint them but you could sand them with a really fine sandpaper to get the same effect.

Check out some pillows by Galbraith and Paul (Room and Board sells them as do other online sites). They make gorgeous throw pillows with distinctive colors that could really make the room come together. Orange, white, or even chartreuse would make great accent colors. They aren't cheap but RnB often has them on sale.
