fredbiscotti- thanks for the Torrans link! We have been looking for patio chairs that look like that and have not had much luck finding actual vintage chairs.

oh, heck yes!! membrillo thumbprint cookies are excellent! Latino households almost always have membrillo in the fridge! Also excellent are thumbprint cookies with fig jam (mentioned by GreenCayennes)

I know what I'll be baking tonite!

agree with Trovas. horchata! probably my favorite of all Mexican aguas frescas.

Also, not as common as the Mexican agua frescas (but definitely easy to find in Los Angeles) are the Salvadoran "aguas frescas" known as "fresco de [whatever the fruit name]" found in Salvadoran restaurants. My favorites: fresco de marañón (cashew fruit), fresco de chan (flavored lemonade with chia seeds) and fresco de ensalada (pineapple-flavored with medley of chopped fruits- oranges, apples, marañón, pineapple) and how can I forget! fresco de guanaba (guanabana)!

ooh. I want one of each now!

cucumber-chile paletas are one of my all-time favorite paleta flavors. I think I'll just have to make some tonite! and now I'm thinking tamarind-chile paletas would be pretty good too, as I'm a fan of that flavor combination often found in Mexican candy.

I accidently purchased sandwich cookies filled with durian flavored cream (thinking they were vanilla!) and man, oh, man! utterly disgusting! how can a fruit smell like natural gas?

I tried it anyway, and yep. it didn't taste any better.

I won't go near the actual fruit now. no way, no how!

I have nightmares about chayotes, thanks to a mother that forced us to eat them as kids!

being first generation American kids of immigrant parents, our food was ALWAYS the same: Salvadoran. Basically rice and plaintains accompanying every dish. on rare occasions, my mom would make spaghetti, which to use was such a treat!

the only American treats we grew up eating were usually quick breakfast foods that we scarfed down on our way to school: sugary breakfast cereals & Eggos.

as my siblings and I started experimenting in the kitchen we treated ourselves to the comfort foods everyone else grew up eating. but nowadays I make the effort to eat healthier.. so its about 30 percent Salvadoran/70 percent everything else.

there's 2 of us in our household. i am not a milk drinker & will only use it if its called for in a recipe, so I'm not particular about what's in the fridge. my bf on the other hand loves the stuff & drinks it like water. he's very typical-guy-in-his-early-20s & could care less about organic, etc. labels. he just buys the cheap 2% stuff at the supermarket.

what an amazing piece! I've been looking to something similar!

I would also say sell just because it doesn't appear to go w/ the decor your friend has going in her/his place. This would certainly find a better home with someone who appreciates the 50s swanky bachelor pad-decor!
