We have a sage-green cotton twill upholstered sofa. The cushion covers have been through the wash at least a dozen times and held up just fine. Our three year old is allowed to have dry snacks (cheerios, raisins, etc) and drinks in sippy cups on the couch, and all other foods get eaten at the table.
Oh, and all drawing instruments are carefully hidden away! Washable pens only, sharpies don't even exist as far as he's concerned.

I found a Cooshee booster on Craigslist and love it. Comfortable, easy to clean, non-slip, and easy to move from kitchen to dining room table.

I've gotten pomegranate stains out by soaking with Oxiclean in very hot water.

Or if it's a white shirt, dab the stain with hydrogen peroxide mixed with a bit of dishwashing liquid, let sit for a few minutes and carefully pour boiling water over the stain. This also takes red wine stains out of white table cloths like magic. I don't think this is colorsafe, though.

Exactly, mschatelaine. Not only is it too reclined for nursing, but it's hard to get out of it with a sleeping baby in your arms. And the chair is quite narrow, so there isn't much room to nurse a no-longer-newborn comfortably without bopping him on the head (I stopped using a nursing pillow after a few weeks).
Finally, now that he's a toddler and wants to sit side by side to read books, it's a really tight squeeze.
We already had the Poang so we made do. But if there's a next time I will spend the money on a wider, more upright chair with upholstered arms.

love this room. the cozy chair wrapped in a knitted blanket is adorable!
