Jberickson- the trees and shrubs in the raised bed on the left hand side of the garden (if that's what you're refering to) were planted so that when they have grown in a bit, they will provide some privacy from our neighbours on that side. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the lefthand wall only comes to about shoulder height.

As for the four boxes and why they don't have veggies in them... I covered this above- we have two big dogs who get a lot of use out of our garden. Imposing a vegetable patch smack bam in the middle of the garden would have meant that the veggies would not have survived being trampled, eaten and peed on by dogs.

We have raised planters elsewhere in the garden (not in the photos above) where, you'll be glad to hear, we're growing vegetables - in a spot that gets good light, is right beside our kitchen, and away from where the dogs charge around, i.e. a place that makes sense for us.

Thanks AT! And thanks commenters! James- we have a raised planters in another part of the garden where we are sewing veg. Placing them smack bam in the middle of the garden wouldn't have worked - they'd get trampled/eaten/peed on by our dogs!

Living in Dublin, my favourite Georgian doors are bright yellow or kelly green ones. Black can look really chic too and I know of a couple of doors that are painted white with Chanel-style black trim, which also look great. Our own door is painted bright red, which I've been informed is "a bit British" so I may paint it a different colour some day! As for stories that the fanlights were once used in place of door numbers, and the doors are painted different colours to help drunken men recognise their own house - please take these with a pinch of salt.

Thanks all for your lovely comments!
ncantine- the little lights came from a store here in Dublin, but I'm sure at Xmas time plenty of places do similar.
Tiffany- that radiator is rarely on so it's not an issue. Our house is so small, having just the living room radiator on heats the whole ground floor!
AGG- both lamps are from Urban Outfitters.
bclynn- I don't know if linking to further photos is allowed in the competition, but thanks for the mention. Mods - you might want to delete those links to keep the competition fair to other entrants?

Muff - the sofa is from a store here in Dublin, Ireland. I'm going to guess you're not close by..? :-)

Monica - Polly doesn't drool but what she does do is worse: she shakes her head and sends slobber flying around the room. Before we got her I might have had to clean a spot or stain off a wall once in a blue moon, but these days....

Aw, how funny to see my little pooch Polly here on AT! Pretty much every decorating decision we've made reflects the fact that we have two big dogs who get dirty and shed hair A LOT.

When we got our second dog Polly (pictured above) we became familiar with a canine behaviour we'd never encountered before - chewing cables. Thankfully, she didn't do herself any harm but now we keep all of our cables sealed away in a drawer when they're not in use. It keeps the place free from cable clutter as well as keeping her safe, so it's a good development.

Our primary sofa is a leather-effect one - the animal lover in me couldn't do leather, so I ended up spending a lot extra on a high quality leather-effect fabric designed to be extra robust - perfect for pets. It's easy to clean and pet hairs just brushes off. We have another small wool/linen sofa that our dogs aren't allowed on. Not that they understand the politics of being allowed on one sofa and not the other. We leave a sweeping brush across the wool/linen sofa when we're not around, because otherwise they get up on it as soon as we leave the house.

All of our sofa pillows are covered in washable cotton covers that get cleaned every couple of weeks.

Mangabanga - I'm always asked about that vase! Unfortunately I got it in a thrift store and it has no maker's mark on it. Sorry!!!
