I would paint the door, railing, dormer, and trim first, which is a cheap(er) option and easier to change. If you still hate then stone, then move forward with researching more permanent options. Also, you might be able to save up some money while ruminating on the new trim color(s) and stone.

Yay! How when where? I don't think we can get in touch with each other directly through AT and I don't think we should post our email addresses on here.... Thoughts?

Any chance for an AT Meetup in Baltimore? I have lived here for about 8 months. The people are lovely, but it has been really hard for me to make the shift from acquaintances to friends. I think I only saw Baltimore-related post (@stoofy), but maybe we could start something in the Charm City!?!?

After safety proofing (I agree with the plexi-glass thread), I would ask the kids for ideas!! They may have their own unique ideas about what they would like in a play-space!
And in my experience, tents appeal to all ages-- maybe a collapsable tent that they could design together?

Here are two play-tent postings from AT:

Ha-- it's funny what seem people get attached to, but I guess I can understand their resistance since it's their rental property. In that case, I guess I would suggest trimming up the edges and a deep clean....

@Adrian Harris: I like the second idea. :)

Two thoughts:
1.Are you 100% sure you can't rip it up? Did you check with the owner? If you cannot rip up the carpet, I would trim off the fraying parts and just deep clean it.

2. Painting the walls in a stairwell has always intimidated me. Currently, my stairway is all scuffed up from moving a box spring. I haven't painted yet because the wall is about 20 feet high in the tallest point and I am stumped. I can't wait to see what other people suggest.

As an Art Historian, I feel it is my duty to point out that all of the "big" museums (Tate Britain, Tate Modern, British Museum, Victoria & Albert) are conveniently located near the central sites mentioned above and have free admittance to the permanent collections, courtesy of Her Majesty the Queen :)

I vote for white walls and ceilings with a dark grey floor. I would leave the wood beams and stone fireplace as-is at first. You can always pull the paint tools back out if you don't like them against the white walls-- that would be a lot easier than painting it ALL and then deciding you didn't like it....
The window is a great asset, and I love your couch! Good luck!

My grandparents bought a big old drafty house in a small town in Arkansas. The previous owner had health issues of some sort and had had an elevator installed. The elevator had the old grate-style metal door, a bell to ring, and fancy buttons. It made for hours of endless playtime among us grandkids, which looking back was probably really unsafe.
Also, we found a wooden leg in the attic.

My major pet-peeve: chevrons. Used to love them, but now they are everywhere! Walls, furniture, carpets, shirts, bags, dog accessories! Charlie Brown much?

I really like the galvanized tub idea, and here's why:
1. you can bathe a small child in it
2. you can dress it up as per the previous link with "galvanized tubs, inside and out"
3. you can put it away when throwing parties or having house guests
4. metal sides make for endless hours of make-believe with magnetic bath toys

Maybe instead of dumping it out, you could insert some sort of rubber stopper? Seems like an easy hardware store fix.

I just saw some nice tubs on the Ace Hardware Outlet site

A quick google search of "wooden frame mid-century sofa" might give you some more inspiration... I also found this gem of a Mad Men themed living room (with a wood-frame sofa, too!):

Not that you aren't already ripping your hair out over all these tiny projects, but couldn't you just build a vanity? Or, have a local contractor (perhaps one you hired) build exactly what you want?
Apartment Therapy has multiple posts about this topic, here are the first two that came up when I search in the top right:

If you are even considering living next to or across the street from a crazy/creepy/nagging/unstable/volatile neighbor, you should watch "Shut Up, Little Man!"

It's a documentary about this just issue (crazies next door), but the tenants turned the experience into a pre-internet viral phenomenon!

Everyone has a story about the creepy neighbor(S), and sometimes they can be funny later, but think about what you want the next year(s) of your life to be like....

Who needs a tv when you have a big beautiful apartment, huge windows, and lots of books!??!! I say, nix the tv, use the bookshelf as a room divider somehow, and point that couch at a righ angle with the fireplace, facing two accent chairs, so you can look at your guests or over their heads and out those windows.

CUTE dog! It seems like you already have some blues and yellows in your art. A blue rug would really make those wood floors pop... I love the Amy Butler collection of rugs, but they can get pricey. You could always buy a big natural jute rug and paint it or dye it in a pattern....as seen on apartment therapy!
