Another simpler version that I have heard of is that all the guest contribute just $2, which the birthday boy or girl uses to buy one big(ger) gift for themselves. Solves the problem of too many presents and is nice and cheap for the guests.

I guess it skips the lessons on saving/charity but there are other times for that (donating unwanted toys or saving money from relatives etc.).

Personally I don't think guests should have to contribute money just so your child gets to save a bit or give it to charity.

To all those using the kitchen sink - a two or three year old is not going to fit comfortably so you too will be using the bath before long and need a bath mat too!

I found out the hard way but yes if you use a bath mat you must unstick and hang up to dry everyday or it will get mildew, do that and you will have no problems.

Cedar is actually considered a 'green' product and better for the environment in the longterm than using man-made materials.

We have a fireplace in our new townhouse, it is gas with glass doors - can anyone tell me if you should have the doors open or closed when it is on?

Hardly any heat comes out if they are shut, but is it dangerous to have them open?

thanks

Please go for stainless appliances anything else is a fad! Stainless steel has been used in professional kitchens for years, it is far more durable and stylish than any of the current alternatives.

Painted kitchen cabinets are also not a fad, they have been considered stylish for the last 50/60 years. Also this project is not 'let's make the most cutting-edge designer kitchen' it is about improving what they have. Also just cause you paint them doesn't affect the quality of the oak, they will still be solid oak cabinets (not melamine).

White kitchens are a classic design, even a bad or dated white kitchen is still much easier to live with than tacky colours (lets face it a grey or brown painted kitchen is going to date WAY quicker than a classic off-white) or ugly wood.

If it was me I would paint the cabinets, don't worry about future buyers too much, it is YOUR house right now, so make it your own.
If the cabinets look dated now they are only going to look worse in five years. Paint them white/off white, replace countertop with budget friendly butcher block, change the hardware to some modern handles. Buy stainless steel appliances. Fresh paint on the walls and a nice colourful rug and your done. (and do everything the editor suggested too)

I would definately go with floor length, just move the couch out a little so there is room behind. DUring the day they will look elegant framing each side of the window and at night they will fall behind the sofa making the room cosy and warm. As for cost, it's not original but Ikea have a great range of tasteful modern curtains, that are very good value - they look even better if you take the time to line them. I like the Kajsa curtain, which if lined would look very elegant in your room.

Not really related to the X topic, but I bought the Pottery Barn Ikat pattern (shown on cushion) bedding set for 75% off last weekend...

An inspirational home to all of us who don't wish to dash off to live in a townhouse in the surburbs to raise a family. Lovely.

Thanks for the lovely comments. The white lamp is from a local Vancouver store - it is ceramic.

I think you have made a great start on your place. My advice is the lovely bedroom wallpaper would be shown off better if you change the bedding and blind to coordinate more by using different shades of blues, beiges, whites.

Hello, Sarah here again:

Kellarella - Nest of three tables are solid glass (the largest of the three is at the side by the armchair), we got them from a Vancouver based store called Home Delight (in Richmond). About $250 CDN if I recall.

Blandwagon - Completely agree with your IKEA comments - in our defence our only 'large' IKEA items are the office units and the small white unit in the corner of dining area. We consciously choose not to buy our 'investment' pieces i.e. sofa, dining table, chairs, bed, floor lamps, rugs etc, from the 'Swedish Place' or for that matter any 'one place' and they are all from different local stores here in Vancouver or the UK.

Once again, thanks so much for commenting, the feedback really helps us to look at our place with fresh eyes - though I fear this may lead to more home purchases ;) ...

Cheers,

Sarah

Hello ATers - Sarah here, thanks for all the great comments and feedback!! Just thought I would take a minute to address some of the questions/queries raised.

Paint used in the apartment is:
Living room, Soft Fern, Benjamin Moore
Dining area, Seaspray, Benjamin Moore
Bedroom, Day Spa, Behr
Everywhere else, Monterey White, Benjamin Moore

Tiffany - not in Yaletown but a lovely tree lined street in the West End.

Johnnyslimane - Floors are Scandinavian Maple, rustic grade/random length - we got it for a steal at local flooring auction.

Kidmoe - Our building is about 16 years old, there are maybe 5/6 other oval or curved highrise buildings downtown. We have lived here for nearly five years - renting a bigger unit (also fan shaped) before buying our place two years ago.

Mr Dangerous - Sofas are brown not black leather.

Pixie - Office units are indeed Ikea's modular Effectiv range - we have found them a good buy.

Carolynapplebee - We tend to agree about the Ikea light fixture - it was brought as a cheap stopgap till we find/can afford something we really love. Suggestions welcome...

Amedstudio - Yes we need more/bigger artwork - when we see some we like and the budget allows ;)

Thanks again for the feedback it has been really helpful and made very interesting reading!

I love your place. I would describe it as looking 'effortlessly stylish' (but I am sure it did take lots of love and care to get it looking so nice). Super cool.
