Is think a murphy bed also would be the best solution. If you put it roughly on the wall where the clock is, you get to have a window nearby when you're in bed, which is nice to go to sleep to and wake up to. The place where the bed is now feels too isolated for me.

During the day, the bed is out of the way, so you still have open access to the window area.

Forget about the convertible sofa bed! That is WAY too much hassle, especially when you are tired at night and just want to go to bed.

The idea of the table on the underside of the murphy bed is a good one, too. If the table flips down for when you want to use it, you can flip it up for when you want a lot of space to work on a project or just luxuriate in.

Good luck to you and let us know what you decide!

I live in a wonderful craftsman bungalow and really don't miss having the dishwasher. I wash up about once a day and about half an hour everything on the dish drainer is dry and ready to put away.

I also take the time to wipe the flat wear and glassware with a linen towel--they absolutely sparkle, not like what you get from a dishwasher. I'm health-conscious so I'm cooking and preparing a lot more of my food, but since it's just me, it really isn't a problem.

I work out my home office, so I take frequent breaks from the computer and washing the dishes is a nice grounding experience.

I was so put off by your visuals that I didn't watch the video. I do see viewers commenting that you dissed baby-boomers. What's your problem?!

That photo of the girl staring blankly is very off-putting, and the photo of the girl in the bra doesn't work for me either. If there's a message I fail to get it. It looks like someone is trying to pull something off they really don't understand.

For my money, the Lodge all cast-iron dutch oven is the best deal in town! Plus, its looks only improve with age and there is no enamel to chip. A real classic and a once per lifetime purchase!

Not sure what we're seeing in the blueprint--is that the original plan? Can you identify what the spaces are--balcony,closets, etc?

It's only when you imagine that room empty that you realize what a tiny space it really is! What a great solution!!

I know you are not interested in a spice rack, but I had shelves installed in mine and it is amazing what you can fit in that depth. In addition to spices, I store jars of jam, condiments, boxed pasta, snack boxes...

I also fitted the inside door with sheet metal (the kind that they sell in a roll at HomeDepot) and it has become a wonderful magnet board for all kinds of notes, recipes, coupons, clippings. I don't have to keep it tidy because it's on the inside of the door, but it also gives me quick access to everything at one glance instead of sorting through a pile of papers.

My problem with the room is that the "Victorian" styling fights with the "rustic cabin" look. By putting in compatible rustic furniture and touches, you could make the room work.

Lose the pink and floral, put a couple of Hudson's Bay blankets on the beds. The nice plaid throw can stay. It's not a rigid style--your mom has lots of resources available for this look. Google: adirondack, summer camp, rustic bungalow...there's a lot to look at!

Oh, and lose the carpet no matter what!

I have fixtures like that in my house and they are meant to have bare bulbs (mine are shown in an old Sears catalog). When I saw them in the catalog, I realized the bulbs were intended to be round globes. You can find the bulbs online at rejuvenation.com. That small difference made the fixtures look right, instead of something I hated every time I saw them!

I think to call this a "starter home" is very disingenuous. This is a very nice house that could be lived in indefinitely. Also, it's a little insulting to those of us who had REAL starter homes.

Great job! If you want to antique the brass tags, putting them in a bag next to a small dish of ammonia (you only want the fumes) will do the job--leave for a few hours or overnight

I'm not unusually short (5' 2"), but often can't reach items on the top shelf. I will ask a store person for help (if I can find one) or another customer, but after a while this gets annoying...

My biggest pet peeve is the self-checkout counters. The two times I've tried to use them they didn't work properly. I only tried them out of curiosity, though, as I strongly favor dealing with people over machines any time. The only advantage to all the automation seems to be a larger profit for the store, unless you count those people who actually LIKE to avoid human contact

This is simply elegant and looks very functional. When I start to feel cramped in my small cottage (much bigger than your space, though) I find this very inspirational! It's what you DO with the space that matters...!

I have enjoyed morning glories here in northern California every year. They're really not aggressive, or damaging, like wisteria or ivy. They're a vine, so they will climb whatever you plant them near. They are low maintenance and easy to remove in the fall once they die out. Perhaps a vine is not for you.

My nominee for absolute WORST: the above the counter bowl-shaped clear glass sinks. They look okay as long as they never get USED, not to mention ever using them for brushing your teeth. Ick!

Open shelving = high maintenance! I keep things tidy, but whenever I reach for a plate or a I often first need to rinse it before I can use it. This can be really inconvenient when you offer a guest a coffee cup or glass. I live alone and try as I might, I can't keep all the dinnerware in constant rotation. I'm going back to closed cupboards so I can spontaneously set a nice table at a moment's notice
