I love your garden! I live in a townhome near Washington Park in Denver and my neighbors and I are getting close to having a maintenance free garden area in our central courtyard. I love your plant choices for this drought-prone environment (although you wouldn't know we've been in a drought for the past 2-3 weeks). I'd love to plant some similar xeriscape-friendly plants here.

I will definitely check out High Country Gardens and Timberline. Thanks for the tip!

P.S. Blueleaf, I can't even keep houseplants alive, so I feel your brown-thumb pain!

I'm jealous of all the 10 foot ceilings. I have 8 foot ceilings throughout my house. And not one person has voted preferring 8 foot ceilings (including me).

I agree with suzy8track - it would be hot if the guy came with it.

I too have 80's bathrooms - 3 of them, although my vanities are all oak (VERY popular in the 80's) with marble one-piece sink/countertops. Fortunately, the tile is an off-white and the tubs & toilets are white. I'm planning to replace the oak vanities and the one-piece sinks/counters with something more modern (bamboo or teak, maybe).

I think if you painted the walls a bright, bold color - maybe red or an electric blue - the beigey-sand tiles with the flowers would fade into the background and be less of a focal point. Get a bright shower curtain, and maybe paint the vanity cabinet a dark gray or black. Add some bright accessories to the vanity countertop and you won't notice the earth tones at all.

They really loved huge frameless mirrors in the 80's, didn't they? All three of my bathrooms have huge, heavy frameless mirrors like yours. And...even worse...my living room has floor-to-ceiling mirrors glued to the walls! I can't figure out how to get them off without tearing the whole wall down, drywall and all.

You did a fabulous job and your chairs are gorgeous!

What color stain did you use on the wood? I'm refinishing a 1950's desk with atomic legs. I bought a walnut stain and want the color to be same as your chairs. Do you mind sharing what color stain you used?

I have to say 70's too. The dishwasher wasn't a prevalent feature in most kitchens until the 1970's.

My home is one of nine 2 and 3-story townhome units, with the two units created from a Victorian-era house built by a wealthy banker in 1890. In the early 1980's, an architect and developer got together and coverted the home into 2 units, built 6 more units in the same style as the 3 story home around what had been the back yard, and renovated the carriage house, creating a charming small enclave of 9 units in the city with large 100 year old trees in the courtyard.

Several years later, my townhome unit was owned by a sportswriter for the local newspaper who was busted for cocaine possession and very publicly fired from her job with the paper. She and her husband (also a sportswriter) moved to Connecticut to work for a golf magazine. They put what is now my home on the market, where it sat unoccupied for over a year until I bought it for an amazingly low price.

My guess is the 2000's - the mirrored dresser, the leopard print chairs - all scream Hollywood Regency revival from a couple years ago.

#4 is my favorite too. Although the purple door works, it would look better in red.

I look at real estate listings all the time for decorating and design ideas. A realtor wouldn't install Flor tiles to a wall or add custom built-ins to a house for sale, so most of my favorite features of thise house aren't the 'staged' furniture items.

I don't think Freecyle is for the needy only. The only rule is that the items offered must be free. I've had no-shows, but usually you only have to move to the next person on the list to get rid of the item.

My first Freecycle experience: I was browsing through the messages and saw a post from someone needing a briefcase. I happened to have 3 leather briefcases I no longer used, so I emailed the poster to let her know I had one (or two or three) she could have. She emailed me back for my address, and added that she was trying to rejoin the workforce after a divorce, and had very little money to spend on clothing and other business attire. I mentioned I had an entire closet of business suits I no longer wore, since I'd lost a lot of weight and found they were her size. I loaded up a bag with a leather briefcase, some shoes I'd never worn, a few purses, and 12-15 business skirt and pant suits (some still had price tags on them). When she picked up the items, she had tears in her eyes, she was so happy. She would never have been able to afford the clothing I gave her, and I got to give some clothes I no longer wore that were taking up a lot of space to someone I knew would get good use out of them and she didn't have to pay $20-$30 each for them at Goodwill.

I ran across an idea awhile back for something call "Safe-Snap". It's a thin track that mounts to the ceiling or wall. They sell a tape you can sew to fabric with the doodads that slide into the track. You could mount that to the header over the doorway and attach fabric to slide open and closed when desired. Here is the website for the stuff:

Another idea is a bead curtain (not just for hippies anymore!). I love the mirror curtain the website below sells. I saw it in a designer home, and it added just the right amount of sparkle without looking too 60's/70's kitschy.

I bought a similar 1950's desk on Craigslist a couple months ago for $50. It was painted white, but was easy to strip, and the underlying wood is mahogany. A gorgeous piece for about a $70 investment (including paint stripper, stain, brushes and polyurethane finish). I love the atomic legs!

I like the idea of the bamboo box mounted to the wall. You could mount 3 of them - maybe with one upside down as a shelf to hold a small vase of fresh flowers.

Personally, I think the brushed finish would look better with your stainless steel appliances. But, if you want to go with a polished chrome faucet, then definitely use polished chrome cabinet hardware. In a loft space, it would add just enough sparkle to catch your eye from other living areas and would make your appliances more background than focal point.

I LOVE your console. Where did you get it?

Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Good Question: What Should I Do With The Wall Behind My Console?
10/27/08 5:47 PM

I only look at ads with photos. Also, do NOT take photos with your cell phone! And I agree about the weird angle photos...they do nothing to represent the piece you're selling. And PLEASE clear the junk off the item! I can't tell what a coffee table looks like if a month's worth of laundry is piled up on top and your child's Bigwheel is on the floor in front of it.

I've only purchased one item on Craigslist - a painted 1957 mid-century desk with atomic legs. The seller posted 4 pictures that accurately represented the piece (including one of the manufacturer stamp). She quickly responded to my email with her phone number. We arranged a time for me to come take a look. When I arrived, the desk was in a well lit area near the front door, I paid the posted price ($85 - a bargain!) in cash with correct change, and she had her son help me load it into my car. The entire transaction was easy, professional and we each got what we wanted. I only wish I'd downloaded the photos before I purchased it. By the time I got home, the seller had deleted the posting.

I'd go with a color in the veins of the marble - either a brown or dark gray.

By the way, what color are your walls painted? It's the exact neutral I've been looking for - not too cold, not too warm, not too dark, not too light! I'd love to know the brand/color.

I was just cruising Craigslist and found nearly identical sofas, and TWO of them - $800 each or $1500 for both. I love these, too!

Here's the link - maybe the person who posted them can tell you who the manufacturer is:
