My only concerns is that in planting the trees this close together, you're going to have to replace them fairly frequently (every 3-5 years) as their roots grow together and they crowd each other out or get nutrient starved. you might be better off in that instance with potted trees that you could then plant elsewhere or sell and replace when their roots get too big. Way easier than digging them out. Help Identifying These Trees for My Zone 5 Garden? Good Questions |

Getting ready for a cross country move now (second in three years). I hate it. Having to sell most of our furniture, save up for the moving company expenses, finding a new place to live across the country -- it sucks. But I've always been a "don't move unless you have to" kind of person. When Do You Know It's Time to Move? |

Why are people suggesting she move the bed. It's a studio apartment. As in one room. As in, the light from the door's windows are going to be visible no matter where she puts the bed. Have any of you lived in a studio? Jeeze. How To Improve Front Door of Rental? Good Questions |

We have a massive slope in our office. We put half the desk up on cheap cork coasters and put the desk chair directly on the carpet. That seems to keep it in place despite the dramatic slope. Quick Fix for a Sloping Floor? Good Questions |

I have a neighbor who uses up every drop of water in our 3-unit building every day sometime between 3 and 6. We never know exactly when it's going to happen, but it always does. Before she moved in we never had a problem with the hot water. What the heck is she doing down there? Tips From My Super: How to be a Good Tenant and Neighbor Renters Solutions |

Prolonged low level exposure to smog and particulates can lead to serious health impairments like asthma, but also increase the likelihood of heart conditions later in life. You probably already knew that and that's why you're posting the question. Best to check out the local air quality control board data before deciding plants v. air purifier. If you've got a high particulate count in your area (Pm10, Pm 5), you're going to want a high quality purifier because the plants and some cheaper purifiers won't absorb the particulates. If smog is the issue, having lots of plants can absorb some of the carbon and increase the oxygen content. (also they're pretty). When I lived in Bakersfield, Ca, which at the time had some of the worst air quality (both particulates and smog) in the country, I used both. The other thing to consider is getting a good vacuum cleaner with filters, and installing hard floors instead of carpets where you can. Do You Use an Air Purifier in the Nursery? |

It's nice that Apartment Therapy is actually featuring apartments for a change (instead of cottages and houses.) And while many of these are about ten times the size of any apartment balcony I've had, it's nice to see what others have done for some style inspiration. However, for most apartment dwellers lucky enough to have balconies, use of space is our #1 issue, not style. (my current balcony is about 3' by 5'). It would be nice to have more pictures of designs that address that concern. Tiny Balconies: Inspiration from our Tours Renters Solutions |
