you should definitely get this checked. older home especially stil contain asbestos fibers and those cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and other dangerous diseases. anything exposed like this should always be checked. make your landlord pay for the inspection. hope its nothing dangerous, though! I read all the comments above and realized what the problem is: when i looked at the before picture, scrolled down to after picture - i didnt realize what the difference was. i HATE it!!!! hate it hate it hate it. call me a HATER. it's ugly. you have this beautiful fireplace that symbolizes relaxation and peace and you put a giant ugly black box over it? or even INSIDE of it? why??? don't tell my you dont have another place to put it, if u love ur tv so much just put it in your bedroom. leave the fireplace alone!!! thank you for this post! everytime i see this at somebody's house i automatically dont like the people who live there anymore. whatever you do dont paint the brick wall. it's the worst thing you could do. if you end up hating it itd be hard to remove and just such a pain. i lived in an apartment with a white-painted brick wall once. it was the most miserable time of my life. honestly, I ONLY eat soft gingerbread cookies. yours are cakey, mine are more like the bread itself. ever since i was a little girl my grandma baked them for me and i cannot STAND those hard, teethbreaking gingerbread cookies everybody sells and is so proud of.
