I think the desk storage thing is a personal decision. I have a DIY desk - the headboard from my parents' first bedroom set, a solid piece of teak set on metal saw horse legs. The desk, aside from starting life as my parents' headboard, was first my brother's. He left a highlighter smug on the wood; I have put a water ring on it. It has no storage. I love that desk more than anything - and have compensated for the lack of storage by building storage into other features, such as the bookcase. Plus, it is big enough to hold 2 monitors, a laptop, a tablet, papers, and a cat - no small order.

We've got a cat allergy shampoo (for the cat), cat wipes, a furminator (for excess hair), grainfree food, all natural cat litter (plus OTC allergy meds). So far, we've been able to greatly reduce my BF's allergies with these steps. I think the cat litter has made a big difference - it is the Arm & Hammer Naturals, comes off her with minimal licking. Might be worth investigating.

My BF is also a supertaster, and we are somewhat limited in what he can eat. The deal is, I can make anything I want (cooking and baking are stress relief) and whatever does not appeal to him I either freeze and eat over time or take to work, where my hungry, hungry graduate students think I am awesome for feeding them real, good food.

So glad to be getting rid of the outbox. It had reached "outroom" status by last weekend and we took a car full to Goodwill - just in time for the last boxes from his grandparents' basement to come home and explode all over the house (literally; the bottom collapsed and scattered things from the door to the dining room). Thanks to the boxes of adolescence, we are back to a full outbox/out room. The cure will not finish on time - the pieces we needed for the kitchen were on backorder, but we did get a few other small projects done.

I maintain a desk calendar with all of my work meetings outlined; it stays open on my desk. Off site activities are also put into my phone so I know where I need to be an when. I have a 5 days a week mousepad with a to do list for each day; on Monday I write down all the major tasks for the week and any major appointments. Minor tasks are added to each day in the morning when I arrive at work, and are crossed off accordingly. On Fridays, the sheet is removed and filed for future reference (activity reports). It works for me about 98% of the time - I forget at least one meeting a semester.

I've been doing the buying fast as well -along with the January cure - as a way to reduce the stuff that was accumulating in preparation for upcoming cohabitation. The rule of "nothing new" has worked pretty well - except for a cookie cutter for Purim. It has actually felt awesome to be eliminating stuff and instead focusing spending on experiences - like taking a photography class (I have 2 overseas trips for work coming up) - that I will get something out of. My life feels richer.

Tonight will be media fast night - new semester, teaching a new class, and a crazy work schedule meant I was up until midnight designing lesson plans and making visuals. It did inspire me to build some models for my students to handle, rather than using only ppt visuals.

I have lived in big houses, tiny studios, thatched huts and tents over the course of my career. For me, the things I need are a not too hard bed and blanket (bamboo does not cut it without a mat) and some kind of surface to sit at (I have used an upside down cardboard box and sat on the floor). That's all I need to live. To live well and feel at home, I need my cat, my kitchen aid, my books, a bed, a blanket, and a comfortable chair. Oh, and some art.

One option for pet parents may be to take the flowers to work. I will buy flowers for my desk during high stress periods and they cheer me up. Plus, I see them for 8 hours a day, my co-workers seem to enjoy them, and they do not become some sort of salad bar like they would at home.

My ex husband and I used to host dinner parties all the time - probably once a week. He'd invite between 4-10 people over and we'd have dinner. His need for dinner parties meant we had to buy a huge table, then find a home big enough for said table, buy groceries etc for the meal. It probably cost us an extra $700 a month between the added space, the payment plan on the table, and the groceries. That does not include my time - I would work from home on dinner parties days to pre-cook, clean, and then spend half the week doing the dishes. When we split, I wanted none of all the stuff accumulated for the dinner. Now, I have the occasional dinner party on a table built lovingly from scratch, on my deceased grandmother's fine china, and enjoy the experience much more.

I agree textiles - I was expecting carpeting and maybe a wall mural or something to give the illusion of "outside". I do notice however, that the toy kitchen is just in the edge of the photo, so perhaps it was moved for the photo and is usually available?

You can always buy the individual episodes of many favorite shows the day after they air if you have just one or two "shows". I've been cable free for 2 years and have purchased a season pass from Amazon for the one show I watch - at $17 it is a huge savings over cable.

We have the same rules for the cat and people - no feet on food surfaces (dining room table or counters). We try to motivate her not to sleep in the bed because of my partner's allergies (she has a "favorite" chair in the bedroom) but apparently when I am out of town she sleeps on my pillow.

I remember my grandparents' house, where all the cousins would go for the summer. Our bedroom (first coed when we were little and later the boys' room) had blue carpet, a white metal frame bunk bed that we removed the ladder from, a white particle board dresser, a tiny closet, a white particle board TV stand and our TV, which had an NES and a Sega. The drawer and cabinet pulls were red, the bedspreads were white with yellow, blue, and red spots, and we had two bright red bean bag chairs. The art was a single "beach scene" with blue umbrellas. The adults decided to keep us (and our stuff) out of the living room. It was the perfect unisex kids' room - and probably fairly unsafe, as we would jump out of the top bunk onto the bean bags. Funny, I remember the games, but until this post, I would not have thought I remembered the room so vividly.

On a bad day I will still make myself my mom's green beans (from a can) sprinkled with lemon pepper and kraft mac n cheese. The food I crave the most - zipper peas cooked in a pressure cooker with a tiny piece of fat back like my grandmother used to make. I've seen the peas exactly ONCE since 1997.

We've been without for some time - I think the plug was pulled in November. Just Netflix. My bf watches sports, but instead of the $339 football package, a beer or a diet coke + nachos is cheaper (or the same price) AND supports the local economy. He does like the baseball games, but goes and watches them at his grandparents' with them - they would have cable anyway (for said games) and love that he (or we) come and watch with them. My one TV addiction is available the next day after it airs on Amazon for $1.89, which is still much cheaper than cable! We have a google box can stream everything! Plus, it has the keyboard rather than a remote, which is pretty nice.
