I once painted a bathroom yellow with dark brown trim. Every time I walked into it all I could think was 'urine and feces'.

We're a sloppt family, pure and simple. I do find that focusing on one room at a time makes the task a little less daunting, and that's the beauty of this list. Even after a long day if you know you just have to wipe down your bathrooms it makes housework seem manageable.

Art definitely! There's a lot of stuff in your apartment but those bare walls could hold tons of color. There's been some good DIY here lately on making your own patterned wall art.

How Can I Bring Life To My New Rental? Good Questions

With my dismally short attention span, I like to focus on one floor at at a time. We live in a tall skinny house with 3 floors. First I vacuum and shampoo carpets, clean the bathroom and then focus on one area of that floor. Because of lots of pets, I am hitting each floor a couple of times a week and addressing a problem area each time. I treat the days I vacuum the stairs as a 'day off' from any kind of tidying.

This reminds me so much of the attic in our old house! Put baby at one end, and your bed at the other. You'll be plenty close enough to hear nighttime wakeups, but not so close as to hear every gurgle, which is the path to insomnia and eventual nervous breakdown. Use the downstairs closet for your hanging things, and just have low dressers against the walls upstairs where you can't stand up anyway and the floor space won't be wasted. When baby is bigger, it can be 'their' space and you won't have toys everywhere downstairs!
I so wished to be able to do this at our house, but the stairs were deadly steep. I have an acquaintance who put her kids in the attic and they are the envy of all their friends!

That is so funny, and something I never even considered, having always been a house dweller. If I were to dream small, it would be for a tiny, well kept flower garden. I keep ending up with massive, unmanageable yards (first 1/2 acre, now 11 acres) and every now and then I see a beautiful postage stamp in full bloom, weed free, and have an envious moment.

Avon bubble bath will shampoo carpets, wash walls and even get rid of laundry stains. I've given my bathrooms a quick wipe down with a bucket of bubbles. Other than that, vinegar is all I use.

I think strong the brick, while a truly ambitious idea, would be expensive and time consuming (not to mention having to use some pretty harsh chemicals in your living space). Try a warm grey.

Amazing house. It gives me joy that you never entertained the idea of tearing it down and bulding a McMansion. What a place to grow up! I imagine some endless games of hide-and-seek were played there.

There's an area just inside the front door that could hold a very narrow wardrobe. That long hallway is a terrible waste of space in such a small apartment. A fold up desktop of some sort that fits flush to the wall when not in use could turn it into an office? If you had a laptop and didn't mind removing all working materials from your desk, that is.

Simple Way To Cover Ugly Bathroom Tile? Good Questions

Hi Megan, I am a lazy renovator and I would leave the tile, invest in a really cool vanity, and paint your walls an earthy tangerine shade. The tiles are in good shape and it makes for a very functional bathroom, you just have to draw the focus away from them. Drywalling a space that small wold be a fate worse than death....

I think you're talking about building the ultimate kid space, and your child will probably be the envy of all their friends (even those who live in newly built McMansions).

Is it OK for Kids to Sleep in the Closet?

Our old house had a converted attic that we only ever used for storage. Before we rented the house out we spruced it up with carpets, paints, new fixtures etc. It was so cute it made me regret not having used the space for ourselves. It would have been a great reading room/space for my easel, the possibilities were endless. I think our tenants use it to contain a grumpy teenager.
