Wood mulch is typically made from trash wood, ie. pallets, old decking, pressure treated lumber, etc. It's ground up and sprayed with a dye to cover any inconsistencies. It doesn't break down to enrich the soil in the way that a mulch is 'supposed to do,' however it leaches the dye along with any other contaminants the wood contains killing off bacteria, insects and worms.
