Velvet is the way to go if you want to avoid shredding of your furniture. They can't get their claws in and it won't show scratches (from jumping and sliding) like some microfiber/leather-eque fabrics will.

It doesn't help much with the shedding problem...but at least it all stays in one place. I usually just run the furminator (uber cat brush) over the furniture and it picks most of it up. The rest, a pass with the Dyson will get.

I would put it in my living room on the hardwoods in front of the couch for my white cat to use as...um...catoflague. I wouldn't have to worry about the cat hair showing.

take off the closet doors and repurpose the space as a nook (maybe where a desk can nestle?). Paint the inside of the closet a light color and keep the other walls dark.

Why does what's considered good design for bachelors always resemble a hotel room? I've got to think that men can contribute more personal touches than beer signs.

Could do without the office blinds. Love the flatiron print.

Cover the basics...seal up every hole into your hole with steel wool. But this is the time of the year when a lot of mice that have been summering elsewhere trying to make a new warmer home so don't mess around.

I do feel for the little guys and think the sticky traps are just ridiculously cruel. That said, I do have cats who really prefer to torment the mouse to death than go for a clean kill. Sometimes I can intervene and relocate the mouse outside in - witness protection style. But mostly I'll find it awaiting me on the bottom of my tub, feet up.

Borrow a cat for a few days. Their scent alone will scare off all but the most courageous mouse.

When I first moved into my apartment, it had a 80's era dishwasher that was broken. Since I had never grown up with a dishwasher and because my kitchen is smaller than my closet, I decided to use it for pot storage. On a whim (after the thrill of dishwashers in summer rentals) I had it replaced. Though I had to find some other places for my pots, it has really been the miracle cure to a chronically cluttered kitchen. Dirty dishes go right in instead of in the sink or on the counter (I was never a wash as you go person). There is guilt ....but it's fleeting when i see my empty counter. I also only run it when it's packed and it's an energy star. I also try not to use the heated dry which seems to be the big energy zapper.

I got mine a year ago and the center support legs always fall out even when I'm not doing anything that energetic.

That's so true.

I bought a mid-century looking sofa there (for a stomach-churning 5k) before other mid-priced people like Room and Board started to do similar things. Their delivery people broke the front door glass of my apartment builiding and they wouldn't even return my calls about it. When they did, they said I had to deal with the delivery people (who of course couldn't give a shit) to get reimbursed for the glass repair.

Good riddence Modernica.

On the brighter side, when I was in L.A., I discovered this great place in Venice who has AMAZING customer service. The scale of the chair I wanted was too big for a NY apartment, so they made it for me with a couple inches off each side at no extra cost. They're shipping was very affordable from the west coast, and they gave me calls while it was being made to give me a heads up on when it would be done. They also have every fabric known to man. Check them out:

I have some of those shelves...but that many must have cost you the equivalent of a car (and a nice European one at that). But I do love them, they make such a difference in my apartment. The wood and dovetailing really finished off your apartment.

I have vintage chener chairs which are very similar and I think they look lovely with a Danish modern simple round table (it becomes an oval with the leaves in).

But they could also look great with something very dissimilar like mod white (ikea does a good rip-off)...the orange would really pop.
