Hi Faith,
The ostrich eggs came from an ill-fated attempt by my husband's grandparents to raise ostriches on their dairy farm--for meat. They blew out the yolks and kept a few eggs for decorative purposes. The ostriches were long gone by the time I met my husband, but I did get some of the eggs... I just liked the way they looked and liked that they came from the farm. (Of course, you don't have to have a farm source for ostrich eggs, Evolution, in SoHo also sells them http://www.evolutionnyc.com/)

Eating the ostrich eggs sounds interesting, but I think one ostrich egg is equivalent to 18 to 22 chicken eggs...so you'd have to invite a few people over... I don't know if my husband's family ate any of the eggs.... I'll have to look into that!

Hi Sassydo,
Your questions about the shoe made me realize how little I know about it. I only know that it was made as a saleman's sample. My great-grandfather lived in New York City until the '40s (actually in Williamsburg!), then moved to L.A. So it was either made in New York or L.A. in the '40/'50s.... but I'm really fuzzy on the date. I'm realizing that I need to give my grandfather a call and get the whole story. Thank you so much for asking that question and getting me to think about it!

Dizzy,
I went to Canal Plastics, bought multiple sheets of plastic and cut them to size. I used hot glue to stick them to the window (You can peel the glue right off the glass, so it's an ok solution for a rental.) The problem is that when the temperature changes some of the plastic inevitably pops off. So, I actually wouldn't recommend doing it my way. The plastic is a bit too heavy.

I would instead buy a translucent paper--maybe a vellum and use double stick tape. I do love the effect, though. It allows light to pass through during the day (light is all important in a railroad), but gives some privacy at night.

Hi HeidiW, It's nice to meet a fellow librarian. The lucite candelabrum is from Myxplyzyk. (www.mxyplyzyk.com) Unfortunately, it's not on their website... you would have to call or go in.

Thank you all for your comments. I was very nervous about putting my apartment online, and I appreciate all your encouraging remarks.

Wall Clock—I got the inspiration for this from the Conran store in NYC, but got mine on Ebay. I saw two on Ebay tonight. The search is “calendar wall clock” I think mine was just under $100. They do appear from time to time…

Desk—The desk is a Library desk and was a gift from my parents when I got my degree in Library Science. It should be pretty easy to find something similar. Look for “Library Table/Desk”

Tub—The bathroom did indeed come with that crazy tub. You pretty much have to stand on a chair to get in it!

Mail Holder—from Moon River Chattel. They have a whole line of products of this ilk.

Paint Colors—I have no idea what colors of paint I used. I wish I kept a record. But four years ago, when I painted the whole apartment, I had no idea that I would ever be putting the whole thing on Apartment Therapy.

Thanks again. And thanks to the Apartment Therapy folks for facilitating these posts for the past two weeks. This is a great community. It's been a privilege.

I don't know how she cans tomatoes, but the Kingsolver family's favorite tomato sauce recipe is online here:

I think this looks cool, but would be worried about the safety issue--that the opening and closing of the door would dislodge a knife. I have pets, so that would make me a little nervous... (I imagine people with kids would feel the same way...)

I loved the sofa the first time around, but thanks for the great photos so that we can appreciate it in all it's glory.

P.S. RQinGeorgia,
Wow, I just clicked on your name...a lot of nastiness there. Try to say something nice once in a while. It'll make you feel better. Or...if you hate AT so much, don't read it.

Hi Kimberly,
Depending on what titles your grandmother had you donate them to a Library. The New York Public Library has a large culinary collection and often takes donations. http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/grd/resguides/culinary/

If you were interested in going that route, you could contact the NYPL culinary librarian through her blog http://cookedbooks.blogspot.com/

Or you could try to sell them to a cookbook store. In San Francisco, you could try Green Apple Books http://www.greenapplebooks.com (I've never been here, just found it online.) Or in New York, there's Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks http://www.bonnieslotnickcookbooks.com/

Or just send them out in the world and give them to Goodwill...

Good luck.

I also live in New York and have been wanting to start composting. My question is--do you have to buy a machine like the one above to compost in apartment or is there another way to do it...the system just seems a little pricey
