None of the designer responses surprise me, as they really are done-to-death trends in design right now. I don't take it to mean that I personally should suddenly hide my books, despise my mid-century-ish dining chairs, or be ashamed of the (vivid teal) paint job I gave a sad, sad coffee table; but that designers and design publishers should be offering us different and creative design, for both ideal and real living. I don't think anyone is really opposed to Doing It Yourself, but how many lamps made of books do we need in the world (answer: NO MORE).

Heh, I too read this and thought "oh, so I can keep my living room clean by... keeping my living room clean." I know that putting things away is the key to keeping a room tidy, but how do you make yourself do that consistently?

I agree with the posters pointing out that the premise of this blog is pretty much solutions to first world problems. And I also don't like granite countertops, but wouldn't mind if that was my chief rental problem. We have bland formica in our apartment, but that's nothing compared to the hideousness of the cabinets. Such is life as a renter.

I think it looks great. Having grown up with and acquired a number of early and mid-century pieces that *looked* high quality but were actually cheap veneer and had limited refinishing/refurbishing options, I think painting and making it fun is a great solution.

I love the new look. I've encountered the "this isn't wood enough to refinish" issue with vintage pieces before too. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's high quality.

Yep, we grew up with them as Russian tea cakes. So long as it's the same perfect cookie, I'm content.

As someone pointed out on Twitter, Steve Jobs made technology more human-friendly, while simultaneously making technology less free and open. He definitely drove the industry to greater elegance and usability.

Here in San Diego it's also referred to as "barrel wine" and it's one of my favorite options. I've been seeing it at wine bars for over a year, at least. I hope it catches on all over.

We had a sweet potato hash for dinner last night--a recipe from the Martha Stewart Living October 2010 issue. Anyone interested should google "Fall-Vegetable and Quinoa Hash with Poached Egg." SO tasty.

I'm not a collector either. I tried to collect things when I was a kid, because it seemed like something I was supposed to do, but I never could really get into it. I don't have negative feelings towards collections, I just don't understand the mentality/appeal. My husband is a little bit of a collector though.

But if I were to collect something it would probably be Friendship pattern Pyrex and matryoshkas.

I love this so much. Thank you for sharing! Another vote for a full house tour. xo

If it's simply to collect stuff to dump immediately, it seems unnecessarily complicated to me. Is sweeping it into a hole so much easier than into a receptacle at the edge of the counter? I mean, cut-a-hole-in-your-counter and install-a-sliding-receptacle easier? If so, then more power to you.

As nnb points out, the more foam the less CO2 in the beer. There is no truly correct answer--it depends very much on personal taste. I don't personally care for the bitter flavor (or aroma) of too much foam, and I do like my beer to retain a good amount of carbonation. I follow the same tilt-and-straighten method mentioned above. 3/4" of foam is perfect to me, but I won't fuss over less.

But there certainly *is* such a thing as "bad head" where beer is concerned. I won't quibble over 1/4" but if you're giving too much foam you're cheating me out of ounce(s) of ale I paid for.

I would worry about smell and creatures. How do these work to prevent those issues?

I think the staircase and bed corner are intriguing, though I don't get much of a sense of the style from the other 3 photos. I'd like to see a house tour and get a better grasp of the overall style.

I have never met a non-alcoholic beer that approached the flavor of a decent alcoholic beer. Imitating the watery taste of a macrobrew is of no use or interest to me, though I think Kaliber(?) makes a decent non-alcoholic cider.

Perhaps they are aware of the study that shows books in the home boost a child's education level--regardless of the education or literacy of their parents. This looks like a fairly culled and curated library to me. Perhaps it seems like a "display of intellect" if you find the act of reading particularly high-brow or intellectual, but it's also entertainment, and even social if your family is in the habit of reading aloud to each other (as mine is).

Having grown up with a wall of novels in my dad's office and in our living room, and being a voracious reader and re-reader, a home isn't a home without bookcases full of books that I love.

Anyway, this apartment looks very functional and cold to me, in spite of the books. The black in the kitchen is a surprising choice to me, since the space is so small and oppressive. But the use of space is impressive. Well done there.

I can imagine making ice cream out of my milk if every have a baby--just out of sheer curiosity, not to serve to dinner guests. I don't really get the gross-out factor, but I agree with the intimacy aspect. I don't know that I would consume someone else's breast milk product, and I don't know that I'd offer my own outside of my family. Certainly no one should try to force any dietary or culinary choice on anyone else, but I don't think the creation of cheese or ice cream implies any kind of attempt to trick unsuspecting friends into consuming breast milk.

I loved the title too. It squicks me out just thinking about it, but my husband said "oh my god I want to try that--grasshoppers are supposed to be *so good*!" as soon as he saw the picture.
