I love my Bertazzoni stove - it performs well, has plenty of power for my non-restaurant cooking, and has a wonderful feel to it (the knobs, the flow of gas, etc.). I much prefer the experience of using it to my MIL's Wolf stove.

I have a neighbor downstairs who makes the entire building reek of fish on a regular basis. Somehow she cooks it in a way that causes a deeply fishy, distinctly unpleasant smell to permeate the hallways and seep into our apartment (I'm guessing that she pan fries it on high heat, but I'm not sure). I actually really like fish, but this smell is awful. She is Chinese, and I wonder whether this is a traditional method of cooking.

Is there anything I can say? I know her and her husband well enough to stop and say hi when I see them outside, and I've been over to their apartment once. But I feel it's impossible to ask someone to stop cooking something the way that they obviously like to cook it.

Help??

I made a version of this, which I loved. I used 1/4 cup of olive oil (I thought 1/2 cup was way too much), 1/2 cup of maple syrup, 1 cup of almonds, 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds, 1/2 cup of flaked coconut, and slightly less salt than was called for (call me crazy, but I don't like my granola to be discernibly salty). Delicious! It was rich and flavorful and sweet, without overdoing it.

Early Bird granola is too rich for my liking—I'll sprinkle a spoonful on yogurt, but after eating a normal portion of it I feel a bit sick. It has 7g of fat per 1/4 cup (and I pretty much always like to eat more granola than 1/4 cup).

I love making edible gifts! This year I plan to make ginger cookies, orange and thyme shortbread cookies, and some spiced nuts. All three are awesome recipes. In the past I've made Robert Linxe's truffles (plain and spiked), French-style nougat, and candied citrus peel—if I had unlimited time and $, which I don't, I'd make all of these things again.

I made raspberry vinegar this summer, which was delicious (although it was more like jam than syrup for me), and I think it would make a nice gift. I like the idea of making apple butter, but it seems difficult to make a large enough quantity to give as gifts. And sometime I'd like to give out marrons glacés, although I'm still experimenting with the method (my first attempts have been decent but not perfect).

I love the look of the Reese sofa—I think it's by far the most attractive sleeper sofa with arms. I really, really wanted it.

But cost was a big consideration for us, as we were outfitting an entire apartment. We ended up getting the Kensington sofa from Macy's, which, at $1100, was one third of the price of the Reese. It's also elevated (I hate the skirted look), it's not offensive, it's comfortable, and with a bit of spicing up (nice textiles and throw pillows, and other interesting pieces in the room), it's just fine. I still find it the most boring piece of furniture in the apartment, but my partner was not wiling to consider $3-4k for a sofa (the price of the Reese really depends on which fabric you get).

If you're looking for something comfortable, decent-looking, solidly made, and budget-friendly, it's an option. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=347563&CategoryID=37839

We wanted to hire Myk, but he declined the project—three radiator covers. Too small of a job for him. I'm glad he's successful, but that leaves those of us who need a good carpenter but not a wall of bookcases in quite a pinch. Does anyone know of another good carpenter, one who would take a job of radiator-cover size?

Amazing that so many of the comments just attack one another. This is a space for opinions—it's not bad that some people find it beautiful, and others find it too cluttered for their taste! And it's not bad that some people take mild offense at a comment, and others don't. Making fun of commenters, berating others' tastes...not cool.

I really like the visual complexity, the creative repurposing, and the rich and interesting patterns and textiles. Though a few of the areas look to my eyes like displays in antique shops, and that doesn't look very lived-in to me.

Really, really fast: Dice some ripe pear, drizzle a bit of honey over it, and sprinkle a few chopped walnuts on top. For a fancier version, slice the pears thinly and fan them out on a plate. Delicious combination.

Really fast: Whip some cream with a bit of sugar and a small amount of crème de cassis. It will make the whip cream a lovely light mauve color, and give it a fragrant, fruity flavor—all in all a distinctive, memorable version of whip cream. (Don’t add too much, or it will taste cloyingly sweet and look luridly pink. Add teaspoon by teaspoon.) Serve with fresh berries. Or make a quick trifle with a layer of the cream, a layer of ladyfingers drizzled with some sweet, tart, good-quality balsamic to soften them up, fresh berries, and more of the cream.

The ivory sofa pictured at the top is the MGBW Reese sofa—I think it's incredibly attractive. Such crisp lines, and I love how it's elevated. (Most sleeper sofas sit on the ground with a clunky skirt.) I've been thinking of getting it for a while.

"We lean toward stainless steel because it's what is used in many professional kitchens."

That's the worst reason to get something I've heard in a long time. Why not also get rubber floors, and wear big white hats?
