This looks like a downtown Toronto house. Definitely paint the stone. Looks much better. Down the road, maybe consider removing it or recovering it, but I think painting it will be a good stop gap measure. Rinse it with hot water immediately after use and scour it to get off those crusty bits. I use a rough rag I purchased for that very purpose. Dry right away or it will rust. When I had a small rental kitchen, I found a good ol' trip to Ikea solved a lot of my problems. You can't beat their selection of wall storage.
